Guest danmancs Posted June 18, 2005 Report Posted June 18, 2005 I was thinking how much of a pain in the butt it is to have to plug my phone in to charge it, and I was trying to think of ways it could be charged without a cable, I didn't get very far, but... 1. have the casing made out of photo-voltaic cells so you can just leave it in the sun to charge. 2. have some kind of microwave transmitter on the desk that the phone can absorb energy from, although this may lead to an increase in the incidence of cancer! 3. have some kind of short range magnetic induction transmitter on the desk that would charge the phone when you put it next to it. Any other ideas??
Guest Driekus Posted June 18, 2005 Report Posted June 18, 2005 (edited) I've seen that last one once somewhere in an article, the magnetic induction type. It was something like a tablet on which one would place his or her phone/camera/other stuff like that. Would be really convenient. I'm working with 3 or 4 different phones here which all have different chargers. Every now and then I knock over stuff on my computerdesk because I trip over one of the cables which is inserted in the socket on the desk. Pretty annoying and possibly harmful for equipment. Although in the event of an empty battery while calling, you would still need a cable-charger. That magnetic induction stuff does not have any range. PS:why did you post this in the Typhoon-section? I'm sure it would be pretty cool for all devices... Edited June 18, 2005 by Driekus
Guest danmancs Posted June 18, 2005 Report Posted June 18, 2005 Dunno, I was just here at the time...
Guest drblow Posted June 18, 2005 Report Posted June 18, 2005 Definately sounds to me as if those ideas may well lead to the user being exposed to some fairly dangerous emissions, and evetually transformed into some kind of superhero!! ;)
Guest BawBagg Posted June 18, 2005 Report Posted June 18, 2005 There's a mob in Cambridge already working on it: www.splashpower.com Expect a big splash (Boom Boom a 'la Basil Brush) when they launch
Guest celica1.8st Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 Don't electric toothbrushes use something like that? My toothbrush has no contact with the charger yet place it near (<1mm) and the green light comes on and it charges. I presume that is some kind of magnetic way of doing it??
Guest danmancs Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 yeah, it says that on the splashpower website... it looks a great idea, just throw your phone, pda, and everything else onto the pad on the desk and it charges up, can't wait to try it!

Guest danmancs Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 not really what I had in mind, that's more a portable battery, rather than a wireless charger...
Guest clemonator Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 not really what I had in mind, that's more a portable battery, rather than a wireless charger... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I gotcha. I bought a clue and realized what you were talking about. There are other companies that will do this but there will have to be modifications (small or large I don't know) to particular devices in order for it to function.
