GUIDING LIGHT

The guide for the SPV is inadequate and presumes far too much in terms of prior user knowledge. No reference in the index for example to changing settings ( or about the second menu after the first 9 prorgams and I can't recall any note in the index of how to change the date etc. I found out how to change the year. No one on 156 knew how to. Twenty minutes wasted figuring it out myself. Poor case, where do you store the camera. Like the back light , the guide frequently leaves you in the dark. The font size on the key pad is a joke and I am going to have to by more powerful reading glasses to text or even type in a number. I could go on, but somebody probably has. I can't asses the functionality of the cool pc/internt things it should do and what i wanted it for. after a week they can't get me on line at 156. i e mailed Orange suggesting an easy and quick fix to the shortages in the guide by posting an eratum on their website. They didn't reply. It wasn't me ! I used the more reliable cable modem in my laptop. Thankfully for them they couldn't email my SPV ?

Don't think the manual had a "how to circumvent our annoying certification process and run your own apps like you should have been able to in the first place" section when I last looked

The manual is crap though - it still mentions voice tags and says you can record conversations for god's sake! (This is my December version, but I bet they haven't updated it since!)

No offense like, but things like not spotting the second list of programmes after the first 8 is a bit daft! It does say More... at the bottom of the screen. I found menu access quite straight forward, back key to go back etc. The manual IS crap granted but that's why i usually bin the thing and play with the phone first and then go back to it if i'm really stuck only to find it's no help! Changing the date etc... i just plugged mine into the pc and it did it itself! The font size on the keypad?!? is this your first phone? Surely everyone knows whats on each button by now! and if it is your first phone buying the SPV was maybe not such a good idea. And don't get me started with orange customer "services" i rang them on monday "someone will get back to you within 24-72 hours" it's friday now and still no call! Thankfully i sorted the problem myself.

On the recording conversations bit what about just the record function?

Here's why,

A friend of mine has it on his 9210i and he was being given a dodgy deal by a

car dealer over the purchase and service record of his 51plate car.

So he recorded the entire conversation when he was in the show room

and later when he talked to them on the phone the story kept on changing.

and his solicitor was very pleased with the recorings ;)

Voice notes are handy, but i'm not sure how well the SPV would pick up a conversation like you say your friend's 9210 did. Mine can't pick up much at all from much over 1m unless you're shouting, and that's not while it's hidden under clothing! It's a bit annoying with the speakerphone actually; you can hear the phone from a distance but the caller can't hear you!

He started it recording before he went into the showroom

then just placed his keys and phone on the desk when he

sat down

Oh very sly; I like it! The giant counter on the SPV might give it away though, and I still don't think the mic is good enough!

good idea recording the conversation! but its against the law to record a conversation without informing the other party that they are being recored. So if he did get a dodgy deal he wouldnt b able to use the recording in a court. But if its a dodgy dealer im sure a scary letter from the solicitor & playin back the recorded conversation over the phone to the dealer would shut him up ;)

Only if you make the conversation available to a third party - if it's for your own use, you're entitled to record without informing the other party.

Prob againt the law in certain cases but say you were being blackmailed?

you would say to them "do you mind me recording what you say so I have evidence for later?" ;)

To be honest I couldnt complain at Microsoft's GUI development team. Their operation systems all have their shortcomings, however they are all insanely easy to get around and use efficiently.

All the people i have shown my SPV to have got on fine with just "These are the softkeys, they control any application you are using. You move about with the direction buttons and click the middle button for "OK""

As for the time and date i have activesync set to update automatically from my pc, which is updated from the MS timeserver, nice and accurate ;)

does anyone know where the voice recordings are held? I ask because audio files can get quite large when they're a raw recording. if they go to my 128 mb sd card, no problem, if they go to the phone, it'll just die after about 5 mins.

Also, if they are being used as evidence, you'll wanto t back them up

They're on the phone; IPSMMy DocumentsNotes I think, but they use a very high compression codec so don't take up much room.

it is illegal to record a conversation where you are not appart of. otherwise its fine--what i thought anyway
