Does anybody know when will wm5 be available for purchase? For any device that is.

Now there's a post that needed a question mark in the title if I ever saw one.

Probably never, you'll have to wait for a vendor to release it as an upgrade, which is unlikely..

You could in theory buy it yourself, but you would almost certainly have to buy a huge amount of licenses like HTC do, you won't be able to buy single ones.

Its pretty unlikely they will release it commercially. I agree with magical_trevor, they operator will have to release an upgrade or you will have to go through the procedure illegally.

There wont be one, I'm afraid.

Unless we get paul to set up a fake smartphone company, then he buys say 3000 licenses (a reasonable enough amount for them to bother selling them), and we pay modaco £20 each (or however much each license costs, plus a bit of profit to help keep the site running and stuff), and we get WM2005...

Now we just need to find out

a. if it's actually possible

b. if there are enough people that are prepared to pay for it

I have seen Windows Mobile 5 Beta on a C500 - It would appear that this is what MS are testing with.

Sorry no screen shot - couldn't prise it from his hand ;)

You won't see a boxed copy on the shelf next to XP at any point, if that is what you are refering to. This isn't so much because of what MS wants (they like selling software, though supporting legacy hardware in the phone market would quickly get old I suspect) but because the carriers don't like users mucking with the phones they bought (isn't it nice that I can pay a fortune for a phone and still have the carrier lock it because they don't want me having control over my own device).

Anyway, WM5 was released to OEMs a while ago, and the OEMs and MS have been working on getting everything ironed out on soon to be released hardware. You should start seeing phones running it in the next couple of months but they will all be new phones as opposed to existing phones. A quick search of gizmodo or engadget should turn up some candidates like the HTC Universal and Wizard, and Samsungs new music phone with a 3 GB microdrive.
