I know that 1gb mini sd cards are now available and my spv c500 will make good use of one but I want to know if it's possible to connect an USB type harddrive to the phone and play movies on the c500 ?

This idea came to me because I know it's possible to connect an Apacer Share Steno CD311 40GB Notebook Hard Drive to the Sony PSP and play movies, so maybe the same can be done for the C500 ?

Apparently not.

It's something to do with the USB port on the Smartphone being a "client" port (or something, dunno the lingo)

Somebody has apparently made a tool to turn PPCs into USB drives (which is sort of the opposite of what you're talking about), but no Smartphone version AFAIK

I'd also be interested to find out whether there any USB devices like hard drives which can be attached to the C500. There are 3 different receptacle types in the USB On-The-Go (OTG) family: mini-A, mini-B, and mini-AB. Most older devices used the mini-B receptacle, which only allows the device to behave as a slave. Devices which use a mini-A receptacle can only behave as a host. Devices using the mini-AB receptacle can behave as either a host or a slave, depending on which end of a mini-A -> mini-B USB OTG cable assembly is plugged in. The C500 has a mini-AB receptacle. The mating interface of the mini-AB receptacle is mechanically different to the mini-B. Some of the new portable hard drives are USB OTG compatible, so in theory I'd think you should be able to attach these to the phone.
