Guest DJHope Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 Do you think we would have seen quake w/o cert crack? Decided to try out the poll see what you think ;) With certification enabled we will NEVER see freeware applications (unless orange make the process sensible, but i still see it taking too long). Quake for example CANNOT be distributed any other way since the source code is under GNU, and im sorry but that dosnt necessarily mean it isn't a quality application as some might suggest! Comments please!!!!!!! DJ Hope
Guest DJHope Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 I like this poll feature paul nice one ;)
Guest AsherUK Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 We need another poll entitled "Would you like Orange to permanantly remove the certification from the SPV ?" .. although I think I already know what the results would be ;)
Guest neilg Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 Don't think we will see much in the way of freeware or even shareware without some relaxing of the certification. I still just cant get round the whole parallel with PPC Phone edition. Looks like HP's new 5400 series with GPRS (5450 is out already with WLAN and BT) has been delayed big time (being made by LGE instead of HTC this time) and I was hoping that a big push from the likes of a manufacturer like HP-Compaq may have cleared the issues up. Dont think the XDA and Jornada928 are widley enough used to force the issue.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003  sorry I think I just pressed the wrong choice  I think freeware can run alongside paid for apps well, It has for as long as I can remember.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 I think the result of this poll was a foregone conclusion ;) P
Guest Arisme Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 Sorry, another bad vote  (need to wake up before voting ;)) anyway you know where the bad votes are now
Guest DJHope Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 Yeh i think it was too paul i was just curious however their are people out their who obviously think that freeware brings: 1) more competition meaning that people might stop paying for the currenty avalable software. 2) a lower quality of software. 3) a risk to your device such as hidden malicious code. Someone was rigeriously arguing the point against certification/freeware apps on the microsoft smartphone forum and to be honest i wanted someone to argue that point here.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 That the club smartphone site or something else? A link would be appreciated Anyone seen the "smartphone citizens" deal on club smartphone? Microsoft are getting personal with their customs it seems...
Guest DJHope Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 Nah just microsoft.public.smartphone! All the ms people love certification to bits which is what makes me think orange arnt completely blameless!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 hehe k, thought it might just be them ;)
