Guest Gazza Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 How exactly would one go about porting Apps (is that the correct term)? Is it legel to port Freeware Apps? Would it be easier to start from scrath? ORANGE or who ever, sign Apps for F*** sake and let's move on!!!!!!! It must be desperate if I am looking to start doing my own Apps!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 "Is it legel to port Freeware Apps?" Possibly not as long as you ask (and get) permission from the auther of the app in advance and give them credit for the origional. I don't see them odjecting too much as like you say it is freeware.
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 At the end of the day you'll only be porting an app if the source code is available. Generally if the source is available then it'll be on some license like GPL or LGPL or GNU or whatever and you'll be basiacally allowed to do anything you like to it as long as you don't change the licensing terms or try to sell it. Like LINUX. On these licenses if you release anything you must release full source as well. As far as signing goes, I'm not sure how it would fit with the GPL exactly but I imagine if you ported something, paid to get it signed (through Baltimore) and then provided free downloads of the unsigned version and code and a nominal charge version for the signed app to cover signing costs it would probably be acceptable.
