Just got my new C500! Killer apps?

Just what the topic says!

What are the must-have downloads?

I hear stuff about alternate home screens? Also I want something to backup my SMS messages.

What else is worth having?

Also, is there a max. size of memory card that it can take?

Killer apps? Where to start!!!

Alternate home screens are everywhere - there are several hundreds in the MoDaCo download section. Basically,if you can see it or hear it on the phone you can change it. As in everything can be changed!

As for killer apps, that depends what you're into. If you like games, you can download games specially written for the SPV - scrolling shoot-em-ups, puzzle games, arcade, animated RPG's - whatever. Alternatively, you can download an emulator and play your old Megadrive, Gameboy, NES, SNES, or Spectrum ROMS.

If you're into films then you can re-encode your DVDs and watch them full screen on the phone. You'll need a memory card for this as full screen films take up about 1Mb per minute in DivX format.

If you're into music, you phone can operate exactly like an MP3 player, except it can play MP3, WAV, WMA and (with some extra software) Ogg, and loads of others that I've never even heard of.

Basically, what are you into and we'll tell you how to do it. Video watching, remote controlling your PC from anywhere in the room, game playing, or even just surfing your favourite porn websites over your PC's broadband connection for free - the beauty of this phone is it can do (nearly) anything you can think of! :)

P.S. There is a theoretical maximum size of memory card, but it's somewhere in the Terabytes so I wouldn't worry just yet!

Must have - Papyrus - it's a calendar/todo replacement.

Backup SMS - try Jeyo Mobile Companion - allows you to sms from the desktop and also export texts to a desktop backup file. Not sure of what to use to just back them up onto an SD card though.

Max memory size - I *think* I read 1GB somewhere, but don't quote me on that.

Thanks guys.

Some fun driving/shootemup games might be fun!

Don't plan on using the calendar, I have a paper diary for that. Have never found any PDAs flexible enough (tried Palm, Psion 2, Psion 5, P900, PocketPC).

Will use the phone for web browsing, listening to music/watching vids a bit.

Some way of adding different ringtones might be nice - any way I can use an mp3?

Personally I cannot live without GnuBoy (gameboy emulator) and the file explorer replacement I can't remember the name of but supports bluetooth.

Other apps I'm a fan of - PHM registry editor (so useful!), Orneta Notepad (reads and edits txt files) and mobipocket (palm-format ebook reader)

Yep, I'm glad I bought mine too. Been looking on smartphone.net for games and bits, if you do an adobe acrobat stuff, clear vue is a must...games, I like jet games, but can't play very good. Got to have videos as well. Hard to believe a phone this small can do so much.

Picodrive is available at:

http://www.gamesforsmartphones.co.uk/picodrive.shtml

and runs perfectly fine on C500. Mine doesn't play sound (never tried switching it on to be honest) but it plays Streets of Rage VERY nicely. Still a shame you can't do diagonals and you can only use the * key with a direction, so you can either jump sideways or punch whie walking.

Still, cool! :)

Cheers, e.r.g. I'd lost my phone so I couldn't remember the name. ;-)
