Alternatively, one could use lightening to bridge the air gap. USB is a physical connection and can take current to charge the phone safely. Last time I looked wi-fi isn't a physical connection; therefore, it can't take current to charge the phone

I don't think it would be possible to wirelessly transfer energy through air over larger distances (say a few metres and up) unless you would be using super-mega-Ueber-Tesla magnetic fields (which would immediately get all smaller things in your room crashing into the machine), since you need to get current flowing ("current flowing"; is that too much of the same?), and air has proven to be a very good isolator. Even if this was possible, you might want to reconsider whether you want to have lightning bolts flying from your energy socket to your mobile phone. I for one would not want to be caught up in the middle of that process (literally). However, if you do find out how to wirelessly transfer hugh amounts of energy through air safely, don't post your ideas on this forum, but get a patent right away. You'll get freakin' rich! Edit: Hey, Mcwarre, you just beat me to it with the lightning-idea.. :) Another edit: It would be really cool to have sort of like Ghostbuster-beams going to your mobile! If Bill Murray can do it... Well - assuming this is a joke, I still wonder why more phones/pda's don't have solar panels on the back....to be able to just lay the phone or pda down and have it receive a trickle charge, or to put the pda in it's cradle and have the sun reach it through the card window, would be a God-send. I mean - how much would a solar panel cost? Would one the size of the back of the C500 actually generate enough power to trickle charge it?

Look at the Braun toothbrush e.g. As long as the distance is samll, eg. the thickness of the plastic it would be possible to mount a coil of windings on the inside of the plastic above the battery. But if you want greater distances - eg. the capabilities of wi-fi you would need a serious magnetic field. Lets say you want to charge over a distance of 50 meters, you will need something like 1 Tesla, but that would cause somewhat trouble with anything made of metal within the nearest 100 meters. And btw. - the amount of energy you would need to generate the electric field probably exceeds the output of the powertransformers in your village. Even though people might die from the electric field - it is possible - no problen. /Jakob

Soon solar powered devices became available and the need for batteries was gone! Would it be impossible to have light sensor on you Smartphone? I am sure that would not replace the battery, but would help in the longevity of each charge, therefore to "charge handset wirelessly" would be possible , at least in theory (my theory lol) Happy Saturday and god bless those wet hippies :) at Glastonbury! Guest muff Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 well a while back I remember seeing that a guy had invented a 'charging mat' - basically handheld devices had something extra within the hardware for the mat to work, but then you just put your devices on the mat and they charge without having to plug them in the really nice thing was 1 mat could charge multiple devices as it was all wireless :)

T <{POST_SNAPBACK}> loool, thats true. Solar panels would be ideal, and I think that would make the smartphone a whole lot smarter! Though I was thinking through a wifi connection, solar power I think is a lot better. But companies woudl lose a lot of money since we wouldn't need to buy batteries. Or at the very least let it run both on battery & solar power! I'm pretty sure in the future we'll see something like this...

T <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The Typhhon handset allready have a light sensor. It is the small dot just below the 0. But; it is not the LED´s used for keyboardlight that consumes battery. It is the screen. /jakob

Guest muff Posted July 18, 2005 Report Posted July 18, 2005 How about some sort of dynamo which charges as the phone get's moved around (walking etc.)? again, someone invented one of these, it was basically a circle of plastic tube with wire coiled around it, and a steel ball bearing in the middle of the tube - and as u move, the ball causes induction on the coils which lead to a connector to charge the phone there are also little hand winders (bit like a fishing reel) that do a similar job
