Using the USB cable that came with the phone, I can charge it from my computer, but I can't charge it from my wife's computer.

I've just bought a BT77 bluetooth GPS unit that has a car charger with a USB connection, so I tried to see if I could charge the C500 in the car.

But, I can't charge it through that either, still using the original USB cable.

Are there different types of USB cable for the C500?

There's more than one thread covering this - I obviously picked the wrong one to read prior to posting this.

As it happens, there are different cables !

Ah well.....

I ran into a similar problem. Just purchased a car charger at Fry's, bought an inexpesive one about $10. When I plug it into the car, it lights up showing me that the power is on and when I plug it into the phone, the display will light up momentarily showing me that it knows something has been plugged in, but it will not go into charge mode. Tried two of these on two diffrent cars and two diffrent SMT's and have the same issue. I don't know if a setting on the phone needs to be changed (can't imagine why) or if the connector on the charger does not have all the pins necessary to make it work. Guess will need to buy another brand or hear from someone else who might have a solution. Maybe it is a power issue? ?

The pin 4 and 5 short hack will work-there's examples here on modaco that talk about that.

Hi guys,

Judging from the above, you might be able to answer my question.

I've got 2 C500s & just bought an iRiver mp3 player but I don't have a car charger for it (a bit off forum but bear with me). Basically, what I want to know is, since I can connect the mp3 player to my pc using the C500 USB cable (although it doesn't seem to charge through this cable), does anyone know if I'll be able to charge the mp3 player in the car with my C500 car charger? I just don't know if the wiring inside the plugs is different (i.e. whether the live is on a different pin).

I would try it but I once did a similar thing with the charger from an O2 XDA into my HP iPaq 2210 & my iPaq whistled, popped & had to be repaired (lucky I had insurance).

If anyone knows the answer to this, I'd be grateful coz I don't seem to be able to buy a car charger for the mp3 player & my glove box is full of the bloody things for all my gadgets :)

Cheers

Dan

the usb cable that connects it to the PC is industry standard but the car charger could, and probably does carry a different voltage... so at your own risk i imagine :?: (whistle pop)

USB is pretty much an industry standard and is electrically simple: +5, data+, data-, ground---the mini-B adds the new pin 4 (USB-to-go) with pin 5 being moved to be the ground. I would suspect that if there's enough current and they let pin 4 alone, it SHOULD work. Whether iRiver inline-fused thier USB interface is another matter should they have done something totally off-the-wall: does the iRiver use the same USB to mini-B cable the C500 does? And does it charge the unit when you use it to move stuff to the iRiver?

Hi Wazmo,

Sorry for the delay but I've been away.

To answer your questions, yes, the iRiver can & does use the same usb cable as my C500 (checked this so that I could free up a USB port on my PC) but whilst the iRiver's attached & I'm transferring files, it doesn't charge (I have to hook it up to the mains charger to do that, tho it would be nice if it did charge whilst connected).

Hope that helps & that you can help me :)

Cheers.

Dan
