I've finally had enough of the original SPV's headset stucking bug (and sudden camera failure) and decided to upgrade to C500.

Orange seems to want £30 a month for a year for it (including Orange Care), that's £360 in total.

Ebay seems to offer them at around £170, and currently (with 02) I spend around £60-£80 on phone calls etc. in a year. That's £250.

Is the extra £110 (of it £60 Orange Care) worth it? It seems a lot of people are getting replacement phones, but what are the chances of it failing?

I got mine on contract but without the care, and have (touch wood) had no problems with it yet, bar the 'Tsss' noise problem with headphones (see elsewhere in this forum). You may pay more for contract, but you may be able to get a good deal with more free minutes for the first 6 months for example. See what they can offer you- you have to be cheeky sometimes.

If you can afford it though, it may be worth you waiting for the C550 released later this month, with dedicated media buttons and better camera.

I have taken a risk going without the Orange care, but that was my own choice, I suggest you make the choice yourself, so you can't blame anyone else if anything does go wrong.

The only advantage I would get going for contract would be the Orange Care, as with all the free minutes it still turns out to 20p/min, which is worse than my current O2 pay as you go. I am basically trying to decide if Orange Care is worth £110, and for that I need to know if C500 is likely to fail in a year or not from someone more experienced with the C500s than me.

www.e2save.com has a fairly good deal, all you have to do is claim back cash though. You also should cancel their insurance after 3 months free trial - Orange Care is probobly better than the e2save insurance.

>>£110

Remember that orange care itself is only £60 so you're just paying £50 more for the contract. Also, if you claim there is a £20 excess.

If you search around the net you can get a brand new C500 on payg for about £135 and if you break it you might be able to fix it yourself or get the parts on ebay.

I found £140 payg, will do for me :)

So, £140 + £80 for O2 fees = £220 over the next year.

£360 - £220 = £140.

I think Orange Care is definately not worth £140 (as that's exeactly the cost of another C500 should I break the first.

You can buy one on Orange's website for free on any tariff worth £25/month or more. Including the Orange Value Promise plans.

They are also doing the standard plans with double minutes too.

Go to http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/show/handset...monthly/all/all,

choose the orange spv and then choose a tariff to see how much it would cost.

I've not got orange care and am 6 months into my contract and the phones been ok. You'll get the phone repaired under warranty if it does break down. Orange care goes one step further and gives you accidental damge and theft cover.

£0 for the phone + £25 * 12 months = £300.

£140 for the phone + £80 for the service = £220.

Both are from Orange, but I need to actually get myself to the orange shop...

I've just gone down the PAYG route and ordered a C500 at £120.00 including delivery!

In case the link doesn't work the company is called Great Universal.

It's on Orange PAYG. You could then unlock the phone and set up an EasyPhone account - 15p for cross network calls and 5p for texts! You have a choice of choosing a new number or porting your existing number to EasyPhone.

NB Easyphone don't do GPRS, so another option for cheap calls is Virgin, their bundles of calls and texts are good value.

Insurance: The best I've found is with Endsleigh Insurance. However, you have to have a home insurance policy with them and they add up to four phones to it for 40.00 per annum total. The cover is very good.
