Considering a Switch: From SMT5600 -> MPx220

Hey all, I really need some advice. I have the 5600, which I LOVE, but there are some things about it I don't like: candybar design, mediocre reception (in my area), and I'm not a big fan of the center d-pad/button.

Why I like the phone (hopefully these things will be the same on the 220): I like the overall quality of the phone as a phone. I love being able to sync with outlook. I use Yahoo Music Unlimited and sync to my 1gig miniSD card. I also use MediaCenter and love having a few shows with me at all times in case I'm bored.

Ultimately, I love the formfactor of the MPx220, I had the 200 before the SMT and loved the clamshell.

So, any words of wisdom???

Thanks!

If your arrow was the other way round I would say yes!

If you don't like dust or the rocker, you could get an SP3i like me...

But also the Mpx220 may be flip but that is it's only advantage. It is much wider and bigger the the typhoon and I find the typhoons to be very stylish anyway. Also it is more expensive and more buggy.

Just my two pence.

Although you posting it here will probably get lots of replies of people disagreeing with me :)

I don't think you will get to many arguments Jamma14. I have the MPx220 and SP3i, and had the SMT5600 before the SP3i. Keep the SMT, or get a SP3i. The MPx220 looks nice, but there are many things about it that seem like a downgrade to me. Voice dialing with Bluetooth doesn't work. Tethering the phone to my Pocket PC requires I manually enter a dial string. The phone needs to be reset, and freezes much more frequently. I don't find the MPx220 as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. In fact, I really love the design and style of it. But I don't use it as my main phone. I let my wife use it, if that is any indication to which is better. I love the SP3i. The joystick is fantastic.

Heheh The joystick was the cause for me to exchange the SP3i with MPx220

Well, I must have gotten one of the post joystick fix units. I was really worried about the joystick issues that the earlier SP3i's had, but mine has been amazing. It works extremely well for games, particularly the ones that come bundled as a download from i-mate.

Yeah hope I have too, only had mine for a week or so, I've been using it for games and things and it's fine so far :)

I've had an iMate Sp3. Not bad, the buttons aren't great, they start to push in over time and become uneven. They're also too close to the bottom of the phone and you gotta be careful not to drop the phone.

Dust is a problem and it's not easy to rectify.

iMate has louder and better audio, MPx220 has a more vivid (if slightly smaller) screen.

Camera in the MPx220 is better, although the camera software could be better.

Menus and operation in general is more resposive on the MPx220, Tomtom mobile moves around maps a lot faster.

No need to power down to change memory cards on the MPx220, although the card slot cover is a nuisance (Motorola, look at Samsung phones, they have a sliding cover for external ports).

There's only a few points between the two. I would say if you make a lot of calls in noisy locations you need the iMate. If you like music and play games as well as use GPS then the MPx220 is good.

The Java with the MPx220 sucks, it has to download midlets.

I've had the mpx220 for a while now and just got in the 5600. In my opinion, I think that the 5600 is a much better phone.

I'm not one that has learned to use the phone to the max yet, I have just gotten started playing with the smartphones in general.

But here's what I like about the 5600:

1.) for me it loads much faster than the mpx220

2.) I can go an entire day and not have to reboot my phone because the phone would freeze (like it did on the mpx220)

3.) The layout has improved in the Second Edition of windows, and some of the programs are more updated.

4.) It seems like there were all these random bugs with the mpx220. One day my speed dial would not work, the next day my phone would freeze repeatedly. My phone was very moody, and I have a friend who also has the mpx220 and hailar complaints.

5.) Even after the firmware update, I still saw improvements that weren't addressed, and I still experienced problems with the sound.

Anyway, I have only had the 5600 for a few days and I have already seen a huge difference. Overall, to me, it feels and acts like a better phone than the mpx220. Trust me, aside from the quirky problems, I loved the mpx220, and I was curious how a phone could be better than that phone. And I was convinced pretty much immediately. To me, going back to the mpx220 on a full time basis seems like a downgrade.
