Please, a FAQ?

I've been trying to put a cool home screen on my phone, and I found and downloaded one fine. However I have no idea how to customise it or edit the XML. I'm sure this is a frequently asked question, so can someone post and sticky it for me (and other people)?

I experimented a bit editing my homescreen, but it just made it go all wrong.

In addition I wanted to try the batplugin thing, I installed it to my storage card but I can't change my homescreen to it (it's not in the list) nor can I figure out how to use the plugin in another homescreen.
