OK after doing some extensive research I have one simple question...

I set up my laptop to dial in using Cingulars GPRS via my SMT5600 using a USB cable.

Here is the procedure I followed:

Installed USB Modem Drivers for SMT5600

Went in to Accessorries under Start Menu on the phone and activated the USB modem link

Setup a dial up connection on my laptop and used '*99#' as the number to dial, used '[email protected]' and 'CINGULAR1' as my login and pw. Added the modem string ( AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.cingular","",0,0 )

I dial the connection and I connect at 230kbs (or what ever its supposed to be)

After a minute I drop the connection

What I noticed is that on the phone when I dial the connection, the status bars have two arrows around them, then once connected I get the normal little G in a box with service bars. How ever after a minute the G drops, and its just normal GSM coverage. Usually my phone will never drop the G unless I make a voice call...

My only assumption is that the Modem Link becomes inactive by its self, but I checked it and it states that it is still active... What else could be forcing my connection to switch from GPRS to GSM on my phone?

Thanks,

Eugene

the only thing that I can think of is the things that have happened to me...

If you have your email set to be checked automatically on your device that will disrupt the gprs connections sometimes when it checks for email. If you touch the cancel call button *red button, right hand side*, or attempt to make a call.

I have att mmode and not cingular medianet, but that is what usually happens to me.

WAIT...I just realized that you connect thru USB...DO'h I use blue tooth, and not usb... Try using blue tooth, works everytime

I figured it out... You're first assumption was correct. I run GoodLink on my smartphone which polls for email all the time. When I reset my phone and tried to use it, it worked until GoodLink initialized on it's own. So it gets disrupted by any attempt by your phone to make a gprs connection, as well as if anyone calls you while you do it...

Hi Folks - I'm new here so please be gentle!

This topic really interests me, as I just got my SMT 5600 and changed to Cingular. I need to be able to use the phone as a modem for occassional use on my PC, so I need to figure out the best way to accomplish that.

Has Bluetooth been found to be the easiest method?

Do I need a special driver to enable the Bluetooth/modem operation (or USB driver, if going that route)? Where's the best location to find the needed drivers?

That should hold me for now - but I'll probably be back with other questions.

Thanks!

Rich

Thanks Jenya - unfortunately the link to the USB driver is working. I'll search for it somewhere else.

When you do this, does it use up any of your minutes, or is it just GPRS usage?

PM me for the driver... And no it does not use your minutes, it uses your GPRS Data Plan. The funny thing was that I went online to chat with Cingular Support and the tech tried to convince me that in order to do this method of connecting through my laptop I would need to purhcase the unlimited laptop data plan. They were full of crap obviously... Good Luck All...

Does anyone know of a way for it to use minutes instead of data? I have more minutes than I need but a small data plan. thanks

Interesting. I have GoodLink running as well (BTW, your device doesn't poll, the GL servers push the data to you), and don't have any problem at all. I can connect fine, and stay connected.

BTW, what does the init string you entered do. I did not enter any init string at all, and it seems to work ok. I am on Cingular Blue (former AT&T)

I just searched for the "MPx220 USB Modem Driver" for about 2 hours. I can't find it anywhere. I got it from the Moto website a couple months ago but it looks like they took it off the site. Any help would be much appreciated. ](*,)

If anyone has the CD that came with the phone maybe you could just email me the driver. Thanks

For anyone looking for the HTC USB Modem driver, I found it on driversguide.com.

Problem is, it's generic and doesn't work for phone as is. In a text editor, you need to open up the USBMDM.inf file. You'll see instructions to enter the VID and PID of your phone. I'm not sure if these are generic numbers or not, so I'll tell you how to get them

take your phone and set the modem link to active. Then connect your phone via USB to the computer. Go through the motions of installing the device without the driver.

Go to the device manager on the computer, and you'll see the failed install. Right click on the "USB Device" and select properties. then select the Details tab.

You'll see your VID and PID there.

Go back to the .INF file and replace every instance of xxxx with the VID and every instance of yyyy with the PID.

Now disconnect the phone and reinstall it with the drivers you've modified.
