Dead or broken SMT 5600--worth a new battery?

Hi,

I posted earlier this week trying to get info on getting my Audiovox SMT5600 to boot after the battery drained COMPLETELY. I've charged the battery, although it doesn't seem to hold a charge for very long... Then got the instructions on a hard reset here (hold down soft keys and press the power button, wait for the black pop-up screen and press "0"....). Problem is it just won't take the "0"--I've tried every possible combination of holding the soft keys and pressing 0, letting the soft keys go and pressing 0--nada. The phone just goes through the Audiovox splash screen and then hangs on the Windows Mobile splash screen. The Bluetooth is "ON"--or at least the blue LED is flashing, but the phone just won't boot.

I've been using my wife's Blackberry 7100t while trying to fix this and now I really miss the SMT! It's a great little/powerful device and I want it working again.

Is it worth ordering a battery and seeing if it will boot with a new battery? Or has something happened that's more serious?

If I do order a new battery, are the cheapies ($5-10 + shipping on eBay) ok? I hate to spend $40 for an OEM battery and find out that it doesn't help.

Any advice welcome. I've only had the phone for less than a year, so it really should be dead! I have dropped it a few times, but it always worked fine before the battery ran down completely.

TIA.

here's how you do a hard reset:

while phone is off, press and hold the left and right soft keys, then press the power button for about 1.5 seconds then release the power button while still holding the soft keys until the phone boots up to the hard rest menu, then simply choose yes.

if it's less than a year. then i suppose that it's still under warranty. better bring it back to where you got your phone if hard reset does'nt solve your problem.

hope this will help you.
