Does it seriously mess up a smartphone if the battery is removed while it is still on? (I've done this loads of times on my old phones and had no problems.... but then they weren't smartphones.)

It's ok as long as the phone is not writing any information to the registry. If it is writing and you pull the battery you can risk causing a corruption which we call a partial reset. This is basically the registry trying to repair itself after a fault.

After a partial reset it's best to do a proper hard reset to get the phone back to normal.
