smt5600 dial up connections feature?

I am trying to use the dial up connection feature on audiovox smt5600 for having internet on phone without using costly cingular data service; I am trying to use my dial up isp on 5600 but keep getting the error unable to place call when I dial up the access number after all the information is already set up in the phone (username, password, and access number within dial up connections on the smt5600), is this possible?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does Cingular actually allow CSD connections on their 2G network ? The might only allow data connections via the GPRS network.
