Newbie Nightmare with M2000

I'm having a real nightmare with my M2000. I've spent about 2 hours on the phone to Orange over the past couple of days trying to sort some pretty basic stuff out.

The GPRS I have had to totally reinstall about 3 times: it works for a little while and then starts coming up with an unknown error (?!) when I try to connect. The only solution is to do a soft reset, which works for while, and then it craps out totally and I need to delete all the GPRS settings and reinstall them manually.

The WIFI is terribly flaky. I've tried installing it on 2 different routers (a 3com and a Daytek Vigor) using WPA and after a huge amount of faffing around have managed to get it to work for a few minutes, and then I get no connection. Getting a wireless link seems to work OK-ish, but picking up the IP address using DHCP seems to be where the problem is, and I don't want to put in a static address (why the hell should I)?

There seem to be some basic design problems: like the fact that it doesn't do voice dialling (what is the point of bluetooth without voice dialling???) - especially since the Orange web site specifically says it does.

I also gather the alarm doesn't work if the PDA part of the phone is switched off. I can't believe it's rocket science to have the RTC trip an interrupt to switch on the PDA when alarm time comes. Otherwise you can only use the alarm if the phone is plugged into the mains, or it runs the battery flat overnight.

The WiFI sensitivity is pathetic. MY PC gets a "very good" signal in the bedroom about 8 meteres away from the router, but the M2000 keeps on dropping the signal. Even when the PDA is about a foot away from the router, the signal level doesn't get more than about halfway up the scale.

Overall, the screen is lovely, and the syncing with outlook etc works very well, but otherwise I am seriously thinking of sending it back.

A final thought: now, whenever I am trying to use internet explorer and I have finally got WiFi working - it still insists on trying to dial GPRS to make an internet connection - how do I force it to use WiFi for the internet connection?

AAAGH!

why dont you get it exchanged?

call customer services, explain what has happened and they will swap it over. maybe its a faulty unit?

I'd agree with SkUk21 in that much of what you describe is not normal behaviour and could be down to a faulty unit.

If your SPV M2000 came from Orange and still has an original SPV M2000 rom then you shouldn't ever need to delete and re-enter the GPRS settings as they would be predefined in the rom (presumably correctly!). If the settings were to get deleted or changed you could revert to the original Orange setup by doing a hard reset.

If you're not using an SPV M2000 rom maybe some setting or other has been entered wrong. I made a point of going back to my original MDA III rom and noting the exact settings rather then relying on the Smartphone setting repository...

Unfortunately your problem of using internet explorer causing the wifi connection to defer to GPRS is a common problem and apparently all about the setup.

I've found a couple of threads that MIGHT help:

Andrewk,

I've had none of the troubles you describe. I reckon it's a wrong un

There's also no problem with using the alarm while the M2000 is "off" either - I do this all the time, and with flight mode switched on too it can go through a night losing 1-2% of battery power (sometimes doesn't even drop at all) before the alarm wakes it up on a morning.
