Guest hardysmith Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 Confirmed by email from Richard Brennan (Commercial Director for Orange). 20/01/2003 "There will be an update for the SPV in two weeks time, which will address these issues: (i) increases battery life (on average should get 2 days rather than 1) (ii) freezes are almost gone (iii) radio performance improvement (iv) other bugs are fixed This will be available to all customers either over the air/over the internet/or SD card in the shop. The application certificate security issue has now been solved as well."
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 "Solved"? Damn politions, the lot of them. Wish they'd not feed a load of bull all the time
Guest youngerpants Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 I dont see this as a problem, if we do set up a company to certify apps etc, we will still get freeware(ish) and increased battery life One way or another, we SHALL beat the system (again)
Guest muude Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 My guess is you'll get it in a couple of months... Just look at our Danish upgrade... "You'll have it by mid-December, start of January at the LATEST"..... Yeah riiiiiiight....
Guest be.max Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 This will be available to all customers either over the air/over the internet/or SD card in the shop. where over the internet ?!? thanks
Guest benny Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 I'll believe it when I see it! Hopefully they'll do it before they cut off the GPRS trial  Dunno why but my battery seems to be lasting really well at the moment...been off charge since 7am, and its still on 85% charge, despite being used more than normal. Anyone know how to exorcise an SPV? ;) B
Guest youngerpants Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 Anyone know how to exorcise an SPV? ;) B Yeh, but it in a track suit and send it down to the gym Oh, exOrcise I'm very very sorry
Guest benny Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 I just KNEW someone would make that joke...hehe you'd think I'd have learned by now! B
Guest janagan Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 So basically it will be out sometime this year.....is that too short of a prediction or am i right?
Guest Hax Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 I suspect that both Orange and MS are rushing to plug the "security hole" which is causing them so much public embarrassment and damaging their credibility (some more:) It's not that they are going to push the update ahead to fix real problems experienced by their users, just to try and make themselves look more professional in the eyes of other companies who tend too rate issues such as security very highly. I don't doubt that we will see an update in the next 2 weeks, I just don't think it'll be done for the right reasons. We've all been waiting for an update to address issues such as battery life, freezes and crashes, but have not had anything because we don't rank highly enough with either O or MS. However, the possibility of losing the business of companies who are concerned about the security issues associated with a non-secure phone (sounds very bad to the uninformed - but harmless really) has probably got them making lots more trips to the toilet than normal (I'm sure you know what I mean;) They don't care about their customer's, just their share price! Whinge mode off...... Hax
Guest amo Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 Which is down for orange at the moment i beleive, still significantly higher than other networks though. At least the last time i checked...
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 Down for MS too, but htat was for other reasons apparently...
Guest Firaas Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 I dont see this as a problem, if we do set up a company to certify apps etc, Â we will still get freeware(ish) and increased battery life One way or another, we SHALL beat the system (again) But it means we won't be able to use the Tools under eMbedded Visual C++, or regedit, for example - both of which I've found very useful.
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 Until a development program is properly set up plugging the security hole will eliminate all development on this platform except for companies such as Hexacto who are more closely allied to Orange. I would recommend that anyone interested in development forgo updating their phone until we have established a way forwards for the home development community.
Guest Firaas Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 I personally am looking at backing up "ALL" (gsm, ce, ipsm and bootloader), and then reloading if there is no way to get past the cert loophole. Will also backup the new fix in case Orange decide to remove it from Update when someone works out a cert work around for it, or might just get hold of the aforementioned SD card from Orange shops.
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 The update will almost certainly be an update of the ROM. Therefore if you install it the ONLY way to undo the update will be if you have a backup of the ROM saved on an SD card as can be done from the menus when doing a hard reset.
Guest Firaas Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 Yep, that's what I intend to do ;)
Guest Emad Posted January 20, 2003 Report Posted January 20, 2003 Does it have the same effect as a hard reset then? You have to enter in all your settings again? Oh well, won't have to worry about it for another coupla months (rule of 8, heh..)
Guest Firaas Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 If you use "Save All", it backs up the IPSM as well as CE, GSM and the bootloader. Theroetically this means that you should keep everything on there (everything down to text messages). Whether or not this works in practice, I'm not sure - saving up for some extra SD cards...
Guest Arisme Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 In my opinion the only way to provide a "safe" update (regarding the certification issue) is to disable the bootloader ... and I'm not sure that they want to do that (as there are some cases where a hard reset *is* necessary), I'm not even sure that they can do that without a hack, as the bootloader isn't part of the updatable ROM regions ... fingers crossed
Guest sebset Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 found a new article on silicon.com http://www.silicon.com/public/door?REQUNIQ...118&REQSTR1=TGU
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 Just a copy of Ben Charmey's (sp) article on news.com last week.
Guest mr_tim Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 i would have hoped they'd address more given the long wait. sure they need to address the basic ones first but months and months later we are still waiting for things to be implemented that makes the smartphone platform worthwhile.
