Guest JesseRPI Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 I have been wondering if anyone can sell me, or can make a non-charging USB sync cable for the SMT 5600/C500/Typhoon? The reason I am looking for one is that I have several batteries that I swap in and out to maintain optimum battery health, and do not want to temporarily charge the battery when connecting it to my PC to transfer music. What I typically do now is wait until the battery is run down completely, then plug it into the USB port and transfer my music, while waiting a few hours for the battery to charge back up. I then shut the phone off, swap the charged battery for another one, and use the phone until the battery is dead. I then repeat the process. It would be much more convenient if I didn't have to worry about the battery getting needlessly charged whenever I plug it in, since it has a limited number of charge cycles. Can anyone help? I'd be willing to pay $20 (USD) for such a cable. Thanks in advance. Jesse
Guest TheBadger Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 Well it shouldnt be too hard to do yourself. If you found out on the internet which connections were the positive and negative rail for a USB cable. Then if you cut these wires, presumeably your phone wouldnt charge. You'd need to take care about which wires you cut and make sure you don't short anything or you could seriously mess up your phone. Can't say I'd be too happy doing it, but if you reeeeally want a non charging USB cable... :)
Guest James Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 Li-ion batteries are unaffected by battery memory effect hence its fine to charge them as you want. just dont run them down to '0'.

I accept no resposability for what might have happened had you gone cutting up USB cables :) Just out of interest, what does happen if they reach '0'?

Guest awarner [MVP] Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 As long as you are not connecting it for a few minutes at a time you will be ok. Li-ion batteries are tetchnically designed to last a year at optimum performance. If you try to fully discharge a Li-ion battery it will damage it and cause it to lose capacitance. They are hard to discharge as they have protective circuitry to prevent it, but it can still be done.
Guest Mr.Clark Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 Here's an idea... you could connect via bluetooth to transfer music. It would take longer, but no wires and no risk of "accidently" charging the phone.
Guest JesseRPI Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 I tried to do this, but I am only able to sync files and browse the directories. However, I am unable to synchronize music using this approach with either Napster/Yahoo!/Window Media Player. To synch music, it seems I MUST use the cable. Have you found that to be different? Here's an idea... you could connect via bluetooth to transfer music. It would take longer, but no wires and no risk of "accidently" charging the phone. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Guest Confucious Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 You can't sync music from wmp via BT - a pain really. But like others have said, I woyuldn't worry about charging the phone.
