Guest Tech Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 Hi there. I hope you understand where I am coming from and hope someone can help. I currently own the E200 and the sexy C500. Was actually thinking of starting a new contract with the latest SPV phone as long as it shipped with WM5 (Windows Mobile 2005). Reason for this is because I am a software dev and need to do some development however the stuff I am needing to do is not availible on WM2003. It requires .NET CF2.0 and WM5. With that in hand, The C550 is new - I remember the hype on this forum and others about it. Same with M500/M2000 - everyone thought "oh great, a new fantastic phone which means WM2005 will be on it!" - everyone thought wrong. No matter where I went, google, forums, orange shop, orange uk customer services no one knew the answer. this is going on for the past month now. So its confirmed as of today from me and orange really (hehe) that WM2005 is NOT and will NOT be availible on C550/M500/M2000. They also will NOT perform an upgrade on C500 phones (typhoon) This kinda sucks - you would expect a new phone with the latest OS... but nope. So exactly what SPV's will have WM2005???? They gave me the manufacturer of the SPV - HTC europe contact details (phone number and website) - stupid. It's an answering machine redirecting them to their website (www.htceurope.com) and the website is terrible. all you can do is book a repair service. thats all! no contact details apart from the phone number which redirects you to the website! *sigh* sorry for the rant - I am just annoyed! IS there a way and IS IT POSSIBLE to install/upgrade the C550/C500/M500 OS FROM WM2003 TO WM2005? If so - how? Is it guarenteed to work? Sorry if you think that is an inappropriate question, I do not know. if you cannot answer it because of the rules - I completly understand, please tell me and I will remove that question. It's a simple question really (to orange!) Thanks :)
Guest mavisdavis Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 Well put Tech. Im right behind ou on these new devices being relased, thats one of the reasons Ive sent my C550 back today. Im really beggining to feel a little taken advantage of regarding MS Smartphones. I just wish Samsung would release a model so we at least have a choice.
Guest Tech Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 Thanks very much MavisDavis :) I feel a bit better now that someone agrees with me. cant believe you sent back the C550... should get the C500... again hehe. It's just stupid. I love smartphones for sure but if no one knows anything then how the heck are orange selling such products? it's not hard to put a link to an email address on htceurope it's not hard to train a few representatives at orange by htc.... what's the problem? I have read on various forums that you can upgrade the C550/C500 to use WM2005 however I dont want to do this. why? 1) warranty will be void 2) who will be responsible for replacing the handset if it screws up whilst flashing? 3) where to get the OS.... ? 4) kinda illegal i guess. IS there a way to even purchase WM2005? I know stupid Q - and the answer is probably no as it ships with the phones from the manufacturer...
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 1, Yes 2, You 3, Not from here 4, Definately So that scaps the idea of buying WM5
Guest Tech Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 Thanks :) I already knew the answers but was making a point :D
Guest Tech Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 well i got my C550 today. I may well return it and again ANOTHER C500 as i love that phone. I dont think orange will ship WM2005.... not until maybe mid next year. just wish they would get it since it was launched last month and keep existing/new customers happy by providing more up to date software....
Guest scott2eyes Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 I think that if Orange ever do start releasing these kinds of upgrades, it will involve sending the phone away and signing another 12 month contract (ie. as a replacement for hardware upgrades.) It's exactly the same story as when the MPx200 was in Orange shops at the end of 2003, only it was clearly labelled in shops as "Microsoft Smartphone 2003" when it was running 2002. But once you'd bought it from the shops, where you've been given a chance to check the phone before you buy it, they wouldn't accept returns... I imagine the main problem is what can happen when less techy people want to install a new operating system and lose their contacts/pictures/etc. Was there ever a legal release of SP2003 for the MPx200?
Guest Disco Stu Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 No, there never was. Similarly WM05 has been loaded onto the Typhoon but only because that was the latest device to try it on. Neither device was intended to run the superior OS so it seems reasonable for MS & the operators to not be interested in issuing upgrades. I have no inside knowledge, this is just from what I've read. WM05 doesn't seem all that exciting at this stage so I reckon we might as well wait till phones are developed specifically to use the OS.

I have seen the software on a C500 and they said it took 10 days of messing around to make it work to the best and then the camera still wasn't 100%. The software looks great and has a nice feel too and it is much easier to send / receive files etc... personally even if i had the software i would not want to chance this as you never know what maybe going on in the background. I am waiting for the next release of smart phone as i found the C550 good but not worth paying a new contract for. :?:
Guest Tech Posted July 23, 2005 Report Posted July 23, 2005 :) thanks Well for me I do require WM2005 - not because its the latest but because I need the functionality on that phone to write the software I am trying to write. i mean the C550 is the latest phone - WM2005 DOES have full support for the C550 as well as for the typhoon. I mean I understand about the risk for users to upgrade the OS themselves (the n00bs) but orange should be able to do that in their shop or send it back to their centre or whatever. It's not Microsoft's fault about this - it's orange as well as HTC europe. it's up to the service provider and hardware manufacturer to make up their mind if they want to support it or not, which they should. orange have no clue about this, they dont know anything much about smartphones, they dont even know how to contact htc europe apart from sending the phone for repair to them! :D Today I may return my C550 and get another C500. so confusing and frustrating! aaaa
Guest Pondrew Posted July 23, 2005 Report Posted July 23, 2005 Tech, as a developer wouldn't it be best to have an example of the latest spec Smartphone? If you get a second C500 it won't be QVGA (yes, I know I've been going on about this! :) :D )
Guest Tech Posted July 23, 2005 Report Posted July 23, 2005 hehe true well i have just come back from orange and returned my C550 and got another C500. Why did I return it? because you cannot application unlock/disable security certificate on the C550. It's apperently not supported and its up to HTC europe (manufacturer of the SPV's) if they wish to enable this. HTC are getting worse by the day for me.
