Can the M500 with the right software be used as a remote control to control say a TV or HiFi system? I know smartphones cannot but PPC devices can, however, I read somewhere recently that only some PPCs can and some cannot. Anyone have any knowledge on this?

thanks

Most PocketPC can, but only a few have a CIR (Consumer Infrared Receiver) which allows a big distance...

All others have a normal IR and there the distance is veeeery small

Yes the Magician can be used as a TV / HiFi etc remote

I have had mixed results with software i tried. Vito remote didnt seem to work and would give me an error when trying to select the infrared port, maybe this has been corrected in a more recent version, as i remember the magician is listed as a compatible device on their website.

I currently have TV Remote Controller installed which works quite well, its not as good as some of the others but it does the job. The trial lets u run it 15 times before u need to register. (i now need to register)

Different devices for me have different ranges, eg my sony tv wont work at all from a distance and needs to be within about 50cm to work where as my NTL box will work fine from across the room.

Its just abit annoying having the infrared port on the side instead of the top as you have to rotate the device. i have not tried but i guess playing with the landscape mode and suitable decent software would solve this.
