I've now upgraded to an M500, and what a fantastic bit of kit it is :)

This is my first PPC, and I'm a bit confused as to the expectant battery life of these units. Mine has been running now for about 24hrs following a full charge. It's new, so obviously I've been playing with it a lot, but when not in use I've been pressing the power button once (quickly) so it goes into standby / lock mode.

The battery life shows '1:37' (19%) at the moment and it has just warned me that Main Battery is Low. The back-up is still at 100%.

Basically, my question is this: Should an M500 last as long as, say, a C500 whilst in this standby mode (ie. just waiting for calls / making some calls) or does the M500 use more power due to the various applications running even whilst the unit is in standby?

I've never really used my C500 but I can tell you that the M500 battery last about twice a long as the M1000/M2000. I dont feel like Im tied to the charger anymore!

From using a C500 it seems to get upto 5days battery life at best.

From what I've read most HTC Magician's (SPV M500) last about 2-3days at best.

That's still pretty good for a Pocket PC. I'm lucky to get 2 days out of my MDA III (same hardware as Dade's M2000)

factoring in the new toy playtime, getting a day from the unit isnt bad at all.

Watching a movie for a coupla hours will certainly drain the battery but even with sustained playing, calls, movies etc it will still last a day and probably thru the night...

I did a 16hour charge initially and its been as good as gold on battery life.

on average use for me, same 2-3 days as others report...

Thank you for your replies.

The original query wasn't really out of concern for the short battery life so far experienced - I have played with it rather a lot! :)

It was more of a case of what to expect. I'm certainly more than happy with 2-3 days if I can achieve that.

I get 2 days safe before needing a charge and i have had lots of internet searching and playing. this to me was about as good as my p900 to me its VERY aceptable for a phone and more so a PPC

its all due to if you leave bluetooth on. and a few other settings. the bluetooth bug tho means its left off.

Some setting tips...... turn of accept incoming beams. this turns of the rarely used IR and i set my backlight setting quite low as normal use its fine. also a turn off time after 2 mins if i forget this along with some other minor setting give a good life. the camera will also kill fast due to the full poer it gives to the back light....

I love this phone!!!!

behold - thanks for the tips. I have changed a few settings as suggested - I'd already done the IR, but did alter some backlight settings and reduced the timeout settings.

Well, it's not been charged now for over 24hrs. It's still showing 64% battery AND I'm still playing with it :)

How long did you do the initial charge for?

Thanks

Well, perhaps not as long as I should have ....

The first charge was for about 12 hours, but must confess to having a little play during this process! Charged it again yesterday for another 12 hrs + and it seems to be holding it's charge now perfectly.

Glad its helped. i have got a hord of M2000's in here for work and there life is rubbish thoes settings just seem to help give a few more hours so on the m500 its saving nearer 3 or so but the light is the main one as its always on on heavy use.

You'll go blind... :D

I find I have to charge my phone every night atm. I have it on playing MP3's for between about 6 and 8 hours a day, but the screen is off for the entirety of that period. I guess that it's just still having to run the CPU at full throttle. Shame it can't slip into a less power hungry mode. Don't get me wrong, at the end of the day, the battery still shows as having about 3 hours of PDA usage left on it so I'm not complaining :D

Battery Update

Forgot to update last night, but after 75 hrs following a full charge, the low battery warning alert appeared.

I had been using the phone as normal (my C500 would last about 4 days on my usage) so I'm really happy with the three days that I got :)

Ive just got my m500 and for the first charge i only put it on for a couple of hours. is this a bad thing? i usually charge stuff up on the first charge for at least 12 hours but when i went back up after just 2 hours it was displaying full battery and the LED at the top had changed colour so i took it off charge thinking that because it is lithem ion battery then it has no "memoery" effect. have i reduced its battery life by doing this?

cheers to anyone who could put my mind at rest

(ps i still get about 2 days out of it)
