I have found loads of guides on the net about encoding videos for PPCs. However, most programs I've tried have gave me poor results. I got excellent video quality with Pocket DVD studio, but the audio is out of synch with the video at the start of any videos I encode. When I tried TMPGEnc (several times) with the settings for a 320x240 PPC screen, the video was quite poor quality (pixellated etc). I used to use Windows Media Encoder to make WMVs for my C500, but for some very strange reason Windows Media Encoder always crashes when I try to use it. What programs do you lot use for encoding videos for your PPC?

Cheers

I use DVD to PocketPC it's absolutely fantastic.

Put your home movies, DVDs or TV programs on your Pocket PC and watch them in great quality, with stereo sound and in full screen landscape mode. A memorycard as small as 128 Mb is sufficient to store a full length feature film,or tv-shows and home movies up to a hundred minutes.

It allows you to choose loads of different settings, good support on the software too. Also allows different sources ie: DVD, Hard Drive, etc.

I think I got a trial of that. Didn't get a chance to use it though. Is the video quality good? Or is it slightly pixellated?

I'm still using the same tools for my M500 as I used to use for the C500 and the SPV Classic!!

DVD Decrypter to get DVD onto Hard Drive, then PocketDivxEncoder to get it into Divx format, then Betaplayer (now TCPMP) to play it. Quality always excellent (unless you choose otherwise on PocketDivxEncoder) and no audio syncing problems ever!

I've tried TMPGEnc and Virtua Dub previously but i've got the best results from PocketDivxencoder and Betaplayer (now TCMP). I think you can "rip" the DVD straight from PocketDivxencoder now so there should'nt be any need for DVDDecrypter (I also used to use this and it's pretty good)

Does PocketDivxencoder convert VOB files? That would save so much effort.

Also would be great if it straight from dvd rip

Yep, it decodes VOB files :)

PocketDivXencoder can't decode VOB files straight from DVD if the files are protected.

Not if the DVD is protected  ;)

Then I would suggest DVD shrink and then Pocket DivX encoder. Still two steps but works even if its protected. DVD Shrink is freeware and should not violate any guidelines in the forum.

I found the best software to produce XviDs (playable in Betaplayer) is Smartmovie (of course you could use the Smartmovie player also!).

Smartmovie gave the best results for taking the size of videos down to 320x240 resolution...much better than Pocket DivX Encoder.

If you have a DVD as a source, you could always try something like AutoGK to convert to XviD / DivX first.

I find perfect picture, great audio and full frame rate movies end up between just under 200MB to 250MB...

Mine's are with best quality about 150mb, guess Pocket DivX makes the MB size smaller then...

Just while I'm here, what should I use to convert XviD AVI's?

In fact, what format should I be converting them to!? :)

Just got my first PPC, not really all that aware of what's going on...

Is it best to avoid WMP? I hear lots of good stuff about TCPMP (which I assume plays xvid?)

Fill me in fellas!
