Fido, WAP GPRS and a C550

I thought I was a fairly technical person until I got an SPV C550 and tried to set up GPRS WAP on it! I've unlocked it and am trying to use it on Fido. Settings are as follows:

Start Settings Data Connections Menu Edit Connections Proxy Connections Menu Add:

Description: Fido

Connects from: The Internet

Connects to: WAP Network

Proxy: 205.151.011.011:8080

Type: WAP

Username:

Password:

Start Settings Data Connections Menu Edit Connections GPRS Connections Menu Add:

Description: Fido

Connects to: The Internet

Access point: wap.fido.ca

Username: fido

Password: fido

Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0

Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0

IP address:

Then in the Data Connections screen I have Fido selected in the WAP connection screen.

Finally in Internet Explorer I go to Menu Option Connections:

Untick 'automatically detect settings'

Select network: WAP Network

Then I try and the little G in the box (top right of the screen) appears but then I get an error message 'The page you are looking for cannot be found'.

Help - I'm tearing my hair out (and I don't have much to tear) so please help someone!

If you are using proxy port 8080 then try using Type=HTTP

Test it by connecting to www.google.com

Nope, no joy with that either, same error message.

I'm wondering if Fido need me to register the IMEI of this phone with them? I'm starting to clutch at straws now....

I you get get 'page not found error' then it means the GPRS connection settings are correct.

Access point: wap.fido.ca

Username: fido

Password: fido

The problem is more than likely the proxy server.

Often a good idea is to delete all existing dialup, proxy and GPRS connections and then re-enter the settings. This re-creates the connection data in the registry where it can get a bit screwed up. Always make sure you only have one proxy connection in the phone.

Test with Proxy: 205.151.011.011:9201, Type:WAP and connect to wsp://www.google.com/wml

Next test with Proxy: 205.151.011.011:8080, Type:HTTP and connect to http://www.google.com

You could even try leaving the IP address out of the proxy server and see if it uses a default.

Also try using the WAP GPRS connection without the proxy server as some network operators will allow that. Set 'Internet connection: Fido' ins Data Connections and then set IE to 'Select network : The internet'.

Network operators apply different restrictions to their GPRS WAP service so it's a case of trying the various proxy settings. Any checking of the IMEI or model of phone could cause problems. If all fails then it might be worth subscribing to their GPRS Internet service :)

OK so I thought I'd try their internet service using the following settings:

Start Settings Data Connections Menu Edit Connections Proxy Connections Menu Add:

Description: Fido

Connects from: The Internet

Connects to: WAP Network

Proxy: rapido.fido.ca:8080

Type: HTTP

Username:

Password:

Start Settings Data Connections Menu Edit Connections GPRS Connections Menu Add:

Description: Fido

Connects to: The Internet

Access point: internet.fido.ca

Username: fido

Password: fido

Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0

Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0

IP address:

And joy! It works. They must do some kind of IMEI checking somewhere because I can't get MMS working either - I'll call them later and post my results here.

Good to know you got it working :)

The internet service doesn't usually use the WAP proxy server so I expect that's why it's working. Data transfer using APN internet.fido.ca might be charged differently to using wap.fido.ca so that's worth checking.

I assume you connected successfully with 'Internet=Fido' and IE with 'Select Network: The internet'. Did you also try the WAP connection with proxy address rapido.fido.ca:8080 ?

MMS usually works best if you create a new GPRS connection fo MMS and use the secure wap connection.

Glad you got your GPRS working on the C550, there is a recent post floating around describing how to succesfully configure WAP and GPRS on HTC phones running windows mobile 2003, there is no need to register IMEI with Fido / Rogers, the MMS software ( arcsoft ) is broken for their network. Rogers ship a pink paper in every C500 it sell telling customer the MMS are impossible with the device, only way to send images is via GPRS mail... as for fido configuration, you need to create 3 different connection, 2GPRS and a proxy.

For the First one (Fido):

Connects to:

The internet

accespoint:

internet.fido.ca

username:

fido

Password:

fido

Primary DNS:

204.92.15.211

Secondary:

204.92.15.212

IP address:

LEAVE THIS BLANK!!!

-------------------------------------

For the second GPRS connection (Fido WAP):

Connects to:

WAP network

access point:

wap.fido.ca

user:

fido

pass:

fido

Primary DNS:

204.92.15.211

Secondary:

204.92.15.212

IP address:

LEAVE BLANK!!!

----------------------------------

Once these two connections are created, you need to go back and create a PROXY connection

Name it Fido Proxy

Connects From:

The internet

Connects To:

WAP network

Proxy (nameort):

204.92.15.211:9201

Type:

HTTP

user:

fido

pass:

fido

this will work on any windows mobile 2003 smartphone with Fido as Carrier
