usb retractable sync/charger for spv (original)

I've bought a retractable USB sync/charger which is supposed to sync/charge my original SPV (according to the vendor).

They don't work.

Threads on this board suggest that modifications are required. Is this correct?

Is usb charging possible without modifying the connections?

Some cables do work, but on normal cables they will need modifying.

Try plugging it to the USB port behind the cpu. some cpu's have USB ports in front or on the keyboard-- these don't usually carry charge.
