Ok, so thanks to xnathanx for suggesting this work around fix for TomTom

http://www.modaco.com/C550_Registry_Hack_D...gs-t223886.html

I have now managed to change these settings on my phone using "Mobile Registry Editor" that accesses my registry from an app on my PC.

The keys to change are:

HKLM\Drivers\Display\GPE\LogicalPixelsX (Change from 131 - 176)

HKLM\Drivers\Display\GPE\LogicalPixelsY (Change from 131 - 220)

1. I initally tried to change these values using a registry editor on my phone but got access denied (or some similar message)

2. When I changed these using Mobile Registry Editor it allowed me. After which I restarted the phone

3. When the phone came back up, all the fonts and menu bar, start menu are Extremely Large font

4. When I launched TomTom it worked a treat, with only slight problems in the font and icon proportions, for example the text in the TomTom menu's overlaps the icons slightly.

5. Other than that it seems to work fine!!! - YIPEE

I have a few questions that hopefully someone might be able to answer:-

1. Is there a work around to changing the main phone fonts, i.e. the start menu, so that it fits correctly on the new screen layout?

2. Is there a way to apply these registry change before running tomtom and revert back after exiting TomTom (assuming it works without a reboot in between!) Could an app like QuickApp do this?

Its certainly progression... Lets hope TomTom see this and speed their patch up!!!!!!!!

Feedback welcomed...

Regards

Mark

Hmm, rather than downgrading the device it would be better if TomTom release a 'high-res' patch for their smartphone application, with better graphics etc. to take advantage of the amazing screen on the C550.

Nice work-around though for now. :) But let's hope TomTom DON'T see it and decide that it's an easy hack to speed their patch through. :?:

anyone feeling brave?

this little exe toggles the registry values as laid out by Mark - and might help 550 Tom Tom users until the proper patch is out

I dont have a 550 to test on, but if someone is feeling brave and can try this for me

it shouldn't do any harm, it just toggles the registry values between the default and hacked values - but obviously back things up before you run this just in case

let me know

Doesn't work fer me either.

the registry settings I'm altering are in :-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\Display\GPE

and I'm changing the value in keys :-

LogicalPixelsX & LogicalPixelsY

if this is incorrect then let me know - remember I'm working blind on the info from the top post

if someone could do a reg save of the keys then I can confirm I'm accessing the right keys and amend the program

thanks to beersoft for testing this (and the brave souls above)

I think it's possible that an app to change these settings needs sufficient priviledges and so needs signing with the right ones

not something I can do I'm afraid :)

I could only change them with "Mobile Registry Editor" and back again.

I have tried the exe and it doesn't change the values for me either. I ran mobile registry editor and checked the keys, both said 131. I then ran the .exe program you written and then relloaded mobile registry editor and they still read 131.

I did experience a permissions problem when trying to alter these keys using PHM Registry Editor on the phone. The only way I was able to change these was using mobile registry editor, then reboot my phone and I had the new resolution, I could also then successfully change these back using mobile registry editor.

I think what you are trying to do is excellent 10/10 for having a go. I have exported the keys from my phone below, showing before and after values:-

BEFORE:-

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\Display\GPE]

"LogicalPixelsX"=dword:00000083

"LogicalPixelsY"=dword:00000083

AFTER:-

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\Display\GPE]

"LogicalPixelsX"=dword:000000b0

"LogicalPixelsY"=dword:000000dc

I hope this helps?

I also tried changing the values to 176 and 220 and then running ttm without restarting my phone and it didn't work so it looks like a reboot is necessary.

The only other feasible work around I can think of is to some how change the resolution so it doesn't look so bad for the rest of the phone when running 176x220. Anyone know how to do this?

Confirmed... Up to now this is the only way to get TomTom working on C550. But the fonts are really BIG...

After some playing I've restored the original settings using also "Mobile Registry Editor"

yeah, that appears to backup my thoughts that it's protected (and MRE obviously has the right permissions)

ah well :)

It would be ok if we could change these registry settings on the fly on the phone and not have to restart the phone each time we switch the setting.

Even tho we are changing the resolution down to that of the C500, is there not a way to scale everything else down outside of tomtom, like menu bar, start button, icons and text in the menus? So that the entire phone functions like the C500.

Anymore registry keys out they to be played with?

So close, yet so far...

Thanks

Try searching the registry for "DPI" and seeing if theres any useful things like "FontDPI" or something similar, that would stop it being so big... (you need to lower that DPI, i think, to make it smaller)

That may not work though, as presumably its figuring out the DPI using the width and height you set (as it screws up).

I dont have a C550 either, so i cant fiddle :(

Edit: Be careful, though :) I don't wanna be accused of breaking anyones phone! If you find something which looks like it might be it, post back here first, and ill see if its likely, even then, you should find the current value is above 90... if its something small, its probably either: not the right registry key, or: in some strange microsoft format which noone has a hope of understanding ;)

Edit2: What does tomtom add to the registry? I've got a C500, so i can look into it in the morning, maybe you'll get lucky and find it has something in there you can edit!

well ive tried a few different things and messed about with the x and y settings as the original post suggested. I originally set them to 176 by 220 as suggested and ur right the fonts are humongous.

So i fiddled with the settings and tried 150 x 150

still managed to use tom tom ok although the menu selection fonts are smaller it has reduced the overall menus down in size....

maybe by fiddling with these settings we may get closer to a usuable menu system which wont require a reset every time so u can use phone

just a suggestion guys and as we always say###

try this at your own risk...but it has given me some sucsess

regards all

UPDATE

I again ran the phone this morning and it is very useable if u set the x n y settings to 150 and 150 respectively. It will allow you to use TOM TOM and also use the phone without hoarding size menus.

I havent got enuff other apps on the phone yet to see if this has affected them.

But for those who wish to use TT ont he c550 this maybe a reasonable compromise until a patch occurs

Try it and let me know what you think

But its as always at your own risk

Hey well done..

Ive tried 150 x 150 and its look very good.

Has anyone tried going lower, say 145 x 145?

I will give a few numbers a test starting at 149 x 149 going down towards 131 x 131 (original setting) and post results.

Thanks

Ok it look like 138 x 138 is the lowest setting I can go to. This still seems to be usable, however the tomtom menus are still slightly out of format.

So if anyone does manage to get the setting lower then please post. I tried 137 x 137 and tomtom went to the scrambled screen, I then up'd this to 138 x 138 and it works well.

Yipee!!! I am very please. I can subscribe to their traffic service and use it properly now!!!!

Thanks to all. I am sure this has made quite a few people happy, it certainlly did me as Tomtom was my most used app!!!!

Please feel free to contine to post suggests in getting this perfect -- we might even beat TomTom in getting this resolved!

Thanks for taking the time, saved me a lot of fiddling. BTW, I'm using Arial narrow as a font and coupled with this setting it is very useable, in fact as I remember it is only slightly bigger now than the original C550 font.

I can very easily live with this until TomTom fix it properly.

How did you change your font? Did you edit any of the registry, if so was it one of the keys in my previous email?

Thanks

Doh!

Got tomtom going a treat using 176 x 220, but could not get the screen back to normal even after repeatedly setting the registry to 131 x 131. Used the regedit program in this thread at top, and the Mobile Registry Editor, but no luck. Only a very painful, HARD RESET via the 'Clear Storage' Option....takes a while to do too......

...anyone know a quicker way to get it back?

Also, has anyone tried a combination of localpixelsx/y and CxScreen/CyScreen settings in the same HKLM settings?

What about copying over the ddi.dll display driver file from the c500? I don't advise anyone to do this unless they have the ability to recover their settings.
