Guest Xenzo1990 Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 (edited) Right, well, im hoping to get this device on the 19th of August. I've been reading some things about PPC devices, this is my first one. I've read somewhere that if you let your battery power off, you will loose all your data? Is this true, because orange say that it should be saved by the backup battery for 72 hours. Secondly, powering off the device? Is it a true power off, because ive seen people talking about pressing the power button but still being able to make phonecalls? Is it a poweroff or just a standby state? Also, if you took the battery out that would truely cut all power, what would happen then? What is hard resetting? Is it how I know it to be, pressing buttons to get the phone to go into different modes like on smartphone or what? What is soft reset? Edited August 5, 2005 by Xenzo1990
Guest spangelsaregreat Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 Hi, Pocket PCs are designed that they must always be on to function. Unlike a mobile phone which you can turn off if a PPC is turned off i.e the battery is taken out you loose you data as it is saved in dynamic memory. They do have a backup battery which is designed to give you a safety net if you are caught short with out access to a recharge. In day to day use you really need to charge it every day and it is advisible to plan ahead if you are going to be away from home. PPCs have a power button but it only puts the device into standby mode to conserve battery usage. Taking the battery out does cut the power but as I said above the backup battery will keep you current data safe until it runs out. You can, however save some data to a memory card which is not affected by the PPC being powered down. Hard resetting is where you dump all you current settings and reset the device to its factory state. The device has all the files it needs to do a fresh install saved internally to do this. You really only want to do this if something has gone horribly wrong and only after you have backed up your device. You can back it up either to you PC using Active Sync (Mine does this every time I connect to my PC) or back it up to a memory card. This allows you to restore the PPC on the road so to speak (I carry this out once a week as I sync it and back it up on the PC whenever I am at home). A soft reset simply restarts the PPC without loosing your existing data. It is bit like hitting Ctrl Alt Del on a PC. It is handy for resetting the memory when it runs low. PPCs do require a bit more care on battery usage and a spare battery is recommended if you are a heavy user and away from a charger for a longer period of time. Regards
Guest Xenzo1990 Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 How would you go about changing the battery on a PPC if you loose all settings? Also, how can you hard reset one?
Guest Disco Stu Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 1. Ummm...buy spare battery. Take cover off phone. Take out dead battery....sorry mate, are you asking a different question ? You would just need to recharge both batteries as normal. 2. Press and hold power button and stick stylus into soft reset button-hole. (Ouch ! :) )
Guest Xenzo1990 Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 Right, ok, thanks. Tell me this someone. Ive seen games on Handango for pocket pc, says ARM Proccessor. The m500 has an xscale right? Can you run games that have a requirment of an ARM Processor on an Xscale proccesor.
Guest Disco Stu Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 I was going to reply but then it struck me that I didn't know what type of processor the Magician has onboard ! FWIW I haven't had any particular problems with PPC games; the only ones I held off from trying were the Namco ports but they eventually included the Magician in the compatible list. Anything in particular you fancied trying ?
Guest Xenzo1990 Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 Nah I was just browsing on Handango tbh. Age Of Empires deffinatly, because Im a PC addict to the game.
Guest Disco Stu Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 I'll close this thread then so the specific topic can be covered here : http://www.modaco.com/XSCALE_and_ARM_What_...nce-t224409.htm :) l
