Sounds like something's gone wrong inside the registry and the softkey isn't trying to go to Start anymore. I don't know where abouts we'd even start looking for this in there, so I think the only option is a hard reset.

I know you said you've already tried that and it didn't work, but try it a few more times as the timing can be tricky. If you still can't get it to work, try downloading the most recent ROM from Orange.co.uk and then re-flashing that ROM onto the phone. That should have the effect of doing a hard reset without having to use the buttons.
