Guest iAMDw Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 Hi all, I am looking for a software prog for my MPx220 that can display a decibel reading using buildin mic... Why???... ...well I want to get the most power from the Sound System in my car and I need to change the size & shape of the SubWoofer box etc. but I have no way of knowing witch set-up delivers the highest Volume. Thanx.
Guest newmachine Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 same here, I'm looking for that kind of application as well.

Sorry to disappoint you, but you won't get proper SPL readings from a phone mic! Most small mics distort pretty easily - they're designed to pick up voices, not >120db basss tones! Try and record your sub at full pelt with a digicam and you'll see what I mean. :) Maplin sell an SPL meter, and even that only measures up to about 135db at 70 odd Hz or above - you need a specialist mic to measure low frequency SPL. The best option is a Termlab, but they're not exactly cheap! The cheapest option is to model your sub box using a PC design program, and try out different box designs to find the loudest, but obviously that can't measure your car's transfer function, which will have a significant bearing on what port tuning to use (if you're into pure SPL anyway). ;)
