Newbie M500 Advice

Here's an opportunity for you to give your opinion and sod what anyone else thinks! :)

OK so my new Orange M500 PocketPC phone arrives tomorrow. I own a 1Gb SD card already so how about some advice as to how to fill it.I can also do with some advice as to the best packages for it (software wise).

1) I see mention of a Rom hack BigStorage. Worth doing?

2) I'm not very fussed about watching videos but will prob fill about half the card with old SciFi radio shows to listen to in MP3 format :shock:

3) Emulators.... well maybe Atari ST but the screen might be a bit small (2.8 not 3.5 inch) but any others good on this phone? There are limited controls with only 2 buttons next to the pad I think. What emus work well on this phone?

4) Free s/w I can download an install? I've seen reports saying overclocking is a waste of time on these.

5) Commercial games? Which are worth buying or have trials I can have a go at?

If you need a profile manager

Id be conservative about overclocking and hacking too much. The best way Ive found to speed up a device (any device) running windows (any ms windows) is to throw memory at it. I think expansys might have a 128Mb upgrade path but Im sure without too much searching around you will find someone else willing to do the same.

I even use my jam for making calls :)

Currently all over and under clockers disable power saving features so will both eat battery very quickly.

BigStorage is certainly worth doing (20mb of free Storage that survives a hard reset is well worth it). I've written loads on xda developers forum. Do it before you PPC fills up, otherwise you'll have loads to reinstall afterwards. Make sure you have backup software installed on your PPC anyway, whether or not you do bigstorage.

It's not for the feint hearted, takes some time and anxiety, but is quite doable. Many detailed writeups available.

Emulators: morphgear is the best as far as I know, although IMHO ScummVM is superb.

For mp3s, look at Mort Music or something like that, by a guy called Mort. Also, look into PHM Tools, all free and will allow you to control media player from today screen.

What's an Upgrade Path? Are you saying it's possible to upgrade the Jam/M500's memory to 128Mb?

Expansys offered a service where PPC Techs would physically insert 128mb memory into your Magician. It took a few weeks and wasn't cheap.

I'm not sure if they still offer it but they now sell the device with the job already done :
