Connecting with USB cable?

Ok, So I got a smart phone spv c500 from my sister. I've had it for uh, ages, and my use of it still only extends to making phone calls, sending messages, playing games. .. and most of them things take me a good while to work out every time!

Normally, I consider my self quite computer/phone literate! So I'm determined to get on with this phone! I've put my problem down to the fact that since its inherited, theres alot of stuff that she put on that are confusing and stuff! I find the phone is very messy! But sorting it out would probably take a while in its current state since it is so messy and stuff.

Now when I get a computer thats all messy and stuff, I back up the important data that I want to keep... and format! So I'm thinking, i should format my phone! Which brings me to the point of this post! Is it possible to format the phone so that its back to like if I had just bought it, all the factory settings and applications... and if so, would it then relock the phone (its unlocked for my virgin payg) and if it would relock the phone... how do i get it unlocked again!

Another point is I've finally (woo) got my own USB cable that will fit the phone! So I tried plugging it in and stuff. And windows come up with the new hardware found installation thing. Of course I dont have drivers or anything, so, that install didnt go to well. And it just says the the USB device has malfunctioned!

So can anyone point me in the right direction for getting my phone and computer all together than stuff... i have activesync that I downloaded from ms.com (very slowly I might add, 2.5kbps! instead of the 250 my conn is capable, stupid slow servers)

If I do format the phone (if thats possible) I'd like to back up the games and all the stuff thats on here first! And I'm thinking that activesync is the thing that will help me with that?

Any help/direction pointing would be very very useful! Theres

Yes, you can 'reformat' the phone - we call it 'hard reset' :)

The threads you want to read here are pinned at the top of the Help & Advice and Typhoon sections. Also you could look at the 'First 48 Hours' link in my sig.

A hard reset will not SIM-lock your phone but it might well need application-unlocking again. You'll find Pzee's guide for this covers non-UK owners best if this is appropriate.

You've got MS ActiveSync 3.8 (?) so you're sorted there and know you can back up Contacts, Calendar, Tasks by syncing with Outlook. Most other non-system files / folders can be copied to PC by manually cut & pasting.

Hopefully most, if not all, the third-party software is installed to storage card so you won't lose any of that. After hard reset you should be able to rebuild the shortcuts to the Start Menu folder - some would simply copy that to PC too. If registry entries are involved though you will need to reinstall.

For transferring larger files you will want to get a USB card reader.

HTH
