Guest Eatherz Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 Hi All, please excuse my general lack of knowledge on thismatter, I have been an spv user since the e200 , and have just got my M500 now , I am off to purtgual for a couple of weeks to do various things, and diving is one of them :). But I need to get to specific places that I have not been to before, so I have noted in some other topics that people are saying you can use your M500 as a gps device, running software such as TOMTOM , so my questions are , and this will require nothing short of a long answer , so dont bother answering if you dont have the patience to do so in full, and please I have read the tom tom v m500 issue thread and is no use to me . So questions are 1. Is the M500 GPS / Sat NAV Capable (standalone) 2. How do you go about doing this , 3. What periphiral devices are required 4. General cost would you imagine this would incurr 5. Is there a good set by step anywhere to learn this from . 6. What is the best software to use (ie the best maps provider inc ISP thingy) 7. What are the costs of running the software on a phone (ie the connection per minute sort of thing) thanks if anyone has the time to help on this , as I woudl be really thankfull, and may even send you a post card , and some on portugals finest tinned sardine spread for your toast in the morning. thanks you in advance Eatherz
Guest psionandy Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 I think you are going to have to buy, a BT GPS, some GPS software (inc maps) and a large enough SD card to store them on
Guest chucky.egg Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 So questions are 1. Is the M500 GPS / Sat NAV Capable (standalone) No, you need a GPS receiver (the M500 doesn't have one built-in), but with a Bluetooth/Wired GPS it is capable of SatNav 2. How do you go about doing this , Choose a SatNav app, choose a GPS receiver, install (and get it working! :)) TomTom Navigator seems to be available without buying a GPS, which I hadn't realised. You can download Mapopolis (www.mapopolis.com) and get a free trial, but none of the others do trials AFAIK. Bear in ind that the Mapo maps of Portugal were rubbish last time I tried them 3. What periphiral devices are required Just a GPS 4. General cost would you imagine this would incurr £120 for Navigator, plus £40+ for a GPS receiver. Mapo is cheaper (£80 plus GPS) Not sure about the functionality in CoPilot, but the users seem to like it 5. Is there a good set by step anywhere to learn this from . It depends on the software you go for, but there's loads of threads on this stuff here, so coms back and have a good, long read while you're thinking and after you've bought something 6. What is the best software to use (ie the best maps provider inc ISP thingy) Personally I like TomTom, but I'm going to be trying Mapo out again because I already have a licence for their maps 7. What are the costs of running the software on a phone (ie the connection per minute sort of thing) If the software has Traffic reports etc then there'll be a connection/usage cost involved, otherwise there is none. I don't use the TomTom Traffic feature, so I don't know the quantity of data it uses or the frequency. some of portugals finest tinned sardine spread for your toast in the morning. Now you're talking! thanks you in advance Welcome. HTH
