Guest desecrato Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 (edited) Think it's possible that the government has its hand in Cingular's, Verizon's, etc data stream to track each of its citizens? Isn't it possible with current GPS technology to do that? And to see who each person not only talks to but spends a lot of time physically close? This entirely conspiratorialist idea came from the last sentence in the following Onion article: [Link] Edited August 27, 2005 by desecrato
Guest Confucious Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 Does the US govt. have the resources? The UK govt. certainly doesn't. They can track wheer you've been and who you've called in induividual cases whjen investigating crime / terorism but to do it on any larger scale would be an "interesting" task!
Guest FORCEFOXFIVE Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 "Think it's possible that the government has it's hand in Cingular's, Verizon's, etc data stream to track each of its citizens?" You'd be surprised at what 'they' are capable of. Anyone who has seen Google Earth, well that capability of technology has been around since the late 80's early 90's exclusively to the military, so would say even earlier! With the possibility of introducing toll roads, everyone will have GPS in their cars....what are the implications you say...well...just think of all times you have jumped the lights on an ORANGE, or even RED, and thought 'AH-HA...SUCKERS' and got away with it? It will track your every move! Before your day is over you could have amassed a number of points and fines without you giving a second thought!!!Stopping on a box junction for 20 seconds, illegal parking for 2minutes! This is just the begining, ID cards will be next! BE AFRAID...VERY AFRAID!
Guest Geeklord Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 Capability isn't exactly the question. I would think "what's in it for them" is more on the money (stress on the money). Yes most governments are paranoid and manipulative. Some would go to great lengths to keep tabs on a probable threat. but considering that there are over 2,000,000,000 probable threats, they would be wise to prioritize their efforts. so unless you consider yourself a probable threat to the government, you shouldn't be worried. Ever seen the movie enemy of the state. According to them, the US government has a script that reacts whenever a trigger word is mentioned over landlines--like bomb or president or assasination, etc. I'm sure they have didn't come up with something like that in real life, the movie gave them an idea. so to quote the kinks, "paranoia can destroy ya" cheers
