Hi all

I'm considering an SPV M500 but I'd like to find out the answers to a few questions first:

Can I download the full manual - I went to the Orange site but could only find the getting started guide.

Email:

I assume it can send/recieve POP3 mail as well as Syncing with Outlook - can you select where this mail is delivered to or does it come into the 'InBox'? (I'm concerned that my private POP3 mail will end up on my corporate system when I sync the InBox)

My work don't allow access to the Exchange server via the internet - can I dial in to our RAS servers and then use Mobile Exchange to sync my Phone directly with the server?

Contacts:

Can you assign pictures and ringtones to individuals and groups? And are these pictures/groups visible in Outlook (i.e. can I set them up on the PC and then sync the phone)

Key Lock:

I've read another post on her about issues reagrding the key lock functionality - someone said it locks until a call or SMS comes in, and then it automatically unlocks itself - is this correct?

Also someone else mentioned about not being able to truly turn it off (you can put the phone in flight mode, and turn of the PDA) - this seems a little strange.

If anyone who's got an M500 could explain this I'd be very grateful.

Is there a Car charger available for it?

Sorry for all the questions - I've been browsing on here for over an hour this morning, and found answers to a lot of stuff, but not these.

Any help anyone can offer will be gratefully received.

Cheers,

PaulF

Right, here is the deal with the weird screen thing. When you turn your device off, and select to turn it off and lock all buttons, if you have bluetooth on the buttons will not lock, and you will be able to make calls with the device being off. Really your basically just turning the screen off.

Just to inform you, when you think you are turning any PPC device OFF it really just disables drivers and turns your screen off, locks buttons etc.

So you turn your device off, then John sends you a text. The screen will wake up to tell you, that you have a text. However this isn't a problem if you have set auto turn off after of mins because the device will pop back to sleep again. The way to avoid this I guess is to put flight mode on, turn off bluetooth, then turn your phone up...

I hope orange bring out a DECENT ROM update that actually fixes these not so helpful functions.

P.S.

Yes I think there is some car chargers available. You'll have to search this forum.

My device doesn't do this - I've seen the other thread about it and there are other people who've not had this problem. I wouldn't scare someone off buying them on the basis of a fault that doesn't exist (for certain) with all devices.

Yes, the device does wake up when you get an sms - it has to to notify you. It'll go back to sleep fairly quickly though (you can use a profile app to set a profile that turns the screen off really quickly if you're worried).

Email - I'm pretty sure you can define a specific mail account and not sync it, but I'd have to check. Maybe someone more knowledgable than I can confirm this.

You can assign pictures and ringtones to contacts and or groups, but not using out of the box functionality. You'd have to buy something else, or use a free tool (actually, assigning photots to contacts can be done straight away, because the app comes with the M500).

The beauty of using a PPC device is you can install anything you like to customise it. If you don't like the way something works, either write something to change it, ask someone to write something to change it (you never know), or hope that someone has already written something to change it (which is the case suprisingly often).

Thanks for all the info guys...

I'm still a little concerned about this turning off problem.

If a text message will 'awaken' it when it's turned off, what about Calendar reminders? and more importantly what about incoming phone calls?

If all these do turn the M500 back on, then what do you guys do when you go to sleep? - I turn my phone off so I know it won't awaken me if either someone rings very late, or if an alarm goes off that I'd forgotten about...

Other than this worry - it seems a superb phone/pda - I'm very interested in one, but I need to get my head around this switching off issue.

Also, anyone got a link to the proper manual?

Thanks again for your help.

there are basically two types of "turn off" - one is the ppc device, and the other is the flight mode..

as you may know, the flight mode turns off all the radio functions (sms, calls, gprs etc), and also the bluetooth

and the ppc turn off is just a simple standby, which causes the screen to turn off and lock buttons.

if ppc is standby and a call comes in, it resumes and the call can be answered/txt can be read and you can put it back into standby.

if it is in standby and flight mode then nothing except for calendar appointments/remiders and alarms etc. will disturb you. when im sleeping i turn flight mode on, turn the volume off, and put device in stanbdy by a press on the power button.

more on the volume - there are two sliders - one for the phone's ring volume and another for the device (WMP, alarms etc.) you can also turn them both down, or select vibrate, or turn them off..

hope this is all relevant and helps
