Guest C00LH4ND Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 Apologies if this has already been posted before. I did search for the term and not find anything. I was interested to read and thought I'd pass on awareness of a new(ish) and growing threat of BlueSnarfing. It was not a term I had heard up until 4 days ago yet I have now come across it a number of times, the last of which was in this months PC Pro Magazine.... BlueSnarfing is using a bluetooth enabled device to detect and rip Diary entries and Contacts from an unsuspecting persons phone/PDA who has "Discoverable" on. You can then use/sell said information to those who (for whatever reason) want it.. Message... Lock down yer phone

Guest chucky.egg Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 Ages ago (I don't know when, but I had a T68 at the time so it wasn't recent!) some boffins proved that it could be done theoretically using certain phones, but AFAIK there has never been a publicised incident... I think you can relax, although the principal of not being Discoverable is a good one anyway (to stop BlueJacking) unless you like that sort of thing
Guest shadamehr Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 Remember though, what you CAN achieve without needing any authorisation... Sony Ericsson phones can have a Business Card SENT to them, without any authorisation being needed, or the recipient even knowing. This is a SEND< not a steal. But its still a very dangerous issue, cos imagine if I sent a Business Card for "Sexy Amy, female escort" to your phone without you knowing, and your lass went through your phone...? So don't for one second think that this isn't a problem unless you "Accept" - not by a long shot!
Guest aznsolo Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 it aint guna work cos the other phone needs to agree a connection <{POST_SNAPBACK}> when your being "Bluesnarfed", the person doing it doesn't need you to agree a connection wit him/her..... Bluesnarf is a hack, it goes thru the backdoor. So the only way to to turn of discoverable, or just turn of your bluetooth
Guest DomConway Posted September 9, 2005 Report Posted September 9, 2005 (edited) when your being "Bluesnarfed", the person doing it doesn't need you to agree a connection wit him/her..... Bluesnarf is a hack, it goes thru the backdoor. So the only way to to turn of discoverable, or just turn of your bluetooth <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah but recent phones (eg C500) don't allow a connection without a password or without it being agreed by the recipient, so it's an obsolete threat AFAIK.
