Using IR to open my car door

A few days ago, I left my keys in the car, which really sucked. But it got me thinking,

is it possible to use the infrared on my audiovox smt5600 (we don't call it C500 in the US) as a seperate remote to open my door? I know that the signal on the phone isn't that strong, but it doesn't have to be when your right next to the car right? I just think it would be a cool backup, just in case, so you don't have to deal with all the stress.

And if not, could someone make something like that :) .

ye i remember a story ages ago when they found that a wrist watch with infra red on it (it was used for changing tv stations) but they found out that u could program it to unlock cars :) would be cool if a phone could do it to ;)

Yeah, that would certasinly be cool, although I have never heard of any app that would do that. But if you find any, I will by all means install it on my mpx220!!! :)

i can try to make this app :) I did make a WMP Remote application (almost in v2 now!!) .. see my thread on "WMP Remote v1"... allows you to control WMP on your pc through your smartphone via bluetooth/gprs/usb

so you could say the principal is kinda the same for trying to "connect" to an IR for a device

all i would need is the car... lol... no but really i require to know how the IR works on the device that "opens" the car door

the other thing is - car security. anyone else with this fone an app could do the same for another car.. unless each car has a unique verfication number or something that it requires before successfully opening the door....

generally, car security systems use FM (radio) transmitters to lock/unlock doors, not infrared. if you wanted to somehow use your phone for that, you would have to hook up an IR reciever to your car's security system that controls the locking/unlocking mechanism the same way that the FM module does.

Isnt there a pocketpc app that comes with an IR converter that plugs into the headphone socket? Maybe you could use that tecnology.

There are also IR to RF converters available which as the name suggests convert the IR to a radio signal.

All renaults use infra-red. I used to be able to unlock my car 10 years ago with a tv remote control. Most FM based transmitters *should* use rotating codes for security or it the car would be really easy to steal...................
