Came on here to do some research. The search doesn't seem to like finding Voq, but at least Sierra brings back some info. I have a C500 and a Jam. Love both, but I really like the idea of the qwerty on the Voq. Lack of bluetooth and size seem to be a bit of a sticking point as I read more. But at that price. I'll probably crack soon! Cheers Marc
Guest uczmeg Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 Ahh, you can search for voq* and get some results....
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 Terrible piece of kit but for that price it may be worth just to add it to the collection.
Guest hecatae Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 True awarner, but whats it like for games? how many emulators and ports could be coded to make use of that keyboard?

Which is a first for me! The size is just the killer, the QWERTY makes this so close, but I just don't do big phones. Here is a pic next to a C500: http://www.komunikatory.cz/media/telefony/...voq_vs_5600.jpg Cheers Marc

I aint a fan of big phones and thats put me off buying one :) Thats £60 staying in my pocket for a change LOL
Guest fluffcat1 Posted August 24, 2005 Report Posted August 24, 2005 Thanks for the info! Very nearly bought one the day before at £99! The fold out keyboard looks interesting.... Sierra have dumped the handsets on the market as they're pulling out of the sector, shame really. www.sierrawireless.com/voq.asp "Thank you for your interest in the Voq Professional Phone. On June 7, 2005 we announced we are exiting our Voq Professional Phone initiative. We will have more specific information regarding our plans by the time of our second quarter earnings conference call scheduled for July 20th. " Very little info on the web, but grabbed all the firmware downloads from the main site while I could - the latest is an upgrade to WM 2003 SE. Just put my order in now :-)
Guest Pondrew Posted August 24, 2005 Report Posted August 24, 2005 (edited) Oh man is this tempting. Shouldn't be spending any money at the mo BUT it's so cheap! And like fluffcat mentioned, this device has received LOTS of firmware updates and if I'm not mistaken was the first to offer Windows Media Player 10 in an update. If Fluffcat is right they're also the only provider to officially offer an update route to Windows Mobile 2003 SE... EDIT: Well, bit the bullet and ordered. Should arrive tomorrow and will be my most upto date Smartphone (had an SPV C500 but sold it to a family member after a day, still have an SPV E200 and of course my MDA III Pocket PC Phone). Guest fluffcat1 Posted August 24, 2005 Report Posted August 24, 2005 now not on Today Only. link is here: http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=VOQ I, er, got a 'spare' at the today only price, if anyone's gutted at missing out, pm me. I'll do a mini review tomorrow. Maybe we can have our own device sub-forum for it? Expansys sold a good 120 units in the last 24 hours ( approx 1000 when I nearly bought it on monday, 875 left now ) I bet most were bought by modaco members eh?... Richard
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 A sub forum can be created if there is enough interest, but in reality the device never really made it to the big time.
Guest Pondrew Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 Guess time will tell if there is any need for a new section. My Voq arrived just before midday today. Very good impressions so far but it is huge. Great build quality, screen, qwerty keyboard, sound quality (can't stress this enough), and performance aren't bad either. Been playing music vids encoded for Pocket PC Phone on it and it's handling them far better then expected. Guess the Intel 200mhz processor has far more under the hood then the old TI 133mhz in my SPV E200. It's running Windows Mobile 2003 SE and Windows Media Player 10 already (no need to update). Interestingly not a single bug mentioned in Paul's thread here is apparent anymore. Guess Sierra Wireless fixed everything but the form factor and lack of Bluetooth/camera.
Guest fluffcat1 Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 (edited) Guess time will tell if there is any need for a new section. I've posted on expansys.com's support forum inviting the lonely chaps there over here. I also posted that I received my two today, opened the first, (other is still sealed in case a member wants a 'today only' price on one) **no sticker or plate present under the battery for IMEI / ESN / FCC info** although the electronic IMEI reads the same as the previously sealed box, isn't it an offence not to have one of these on a phone?, to combat theft etc - as electronic IMEI's are easily changed in some handsets. Not that many people ask to look under my battery that often - but a friend who used to work in a phone shop had to log the IMEI of his phone with a manager and they then sometimes traced these back to find the history ( customer trade-ins used to go missing, and 'manager's discount' instead of 'trade in' would be used to discount a new one down instead, with the employee keeping or flogging the phone ) - so people do check..... Other than that, it's big but I like it in a 'walkie-talkie-of-the-future-from-the-eighties-tomorrows-world' kinda way... Nothing more to say until it's charged... EDIT: Can't open power management to check on battery status! Green light, 3 bars full, but I get error 'unable to open settings'!... Should I RMA it? Report them to trading standards? Get a life, posting about a phone at 4.30am? ( No, it's not keeping me awake with worry :) Richard Edited August 26, 2005 by fluffcat1
Guest Pondrew Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 Hmmm. Pretty sure the IMEI plate was on mine but will check once I get home (I'm on nightshift at the moment). One observation I made was that although the green light indicating a full charge came on within two hours, by leaving it on charge the red recharging light came back on half an hour later again and it was still happily charging when I left. Glad I left it charging the full 12hrs (per the manual) as don't want to be responsible for the battery life being any worse then usual. (I've heard battery life isn't great with the Voq but look forward to testing it out - could be the Intel chip at 200mhz is responsible given TI OMAP chips are traditionally considered to deliver better battery life). I did notice that the battery was literally empty when I put it on charge, something I haven't experienced before (all my SPVs came with a partly charged battery). One of the first things I'm going to do tomorrow after taking it off charge is to hard reset it before I start installing software. Oh, and I know what you mean about its 'walkie-talkie-of-the-future-from-the-eighties-tomorrows-world' appearance! :)

Guest Pondrew Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 Errr... Fluffcat1? Did you say your rom version is 2.7.2.4? Because I'm sure I checked mine and found it was 2.4.2.4. I was of the impression that the second digit indicated region... ... now that I think about it, when I checked available languages in settings it only had English (United States) and German. No sign of the English (United Kingdom) mentioned in the manual. Could it be I'm running the American region firmware?! One thing I am certain of though is that it is an A10 rather then an A11 (the A11 has 850mhz band rather then 900mhz ours does).

Can't get into ANY settings submenus currently to do an 'about' - typing as the phone reboots but from my previous notes I scribbled down: Ver 4.21.1088(14235.2.0.0) Radio 03.06 Rom Operator 2.7.2.4 Manufacturer 2.7.2.4 M$ 4.21.14.235.0 Lan 2.7.2.4 File 4.21.14235.0 If anyones' is suspect I would think it's this non-stickered unit! Guest Pondrew Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 Strange indeed. Let me know what you find out...

Guest Pondrew Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 Just arrived home and disconnected the Voq from the charger. Battery level being reported at 98%. Ok. Checked the white label under the battery. Sure enough it is there. Strange that yours hasn't got it, wonder if the second one you got is the same. Oh, and I've just checked the rom version and the rom operator, manufacturer, and language versions are indeed 2.4.2.4 although all the other versions are same as yours (windows mobile build, radio, etc). Why the difference? Anyone know if this second digit does relate to region? If so which regions are our two devices?

Why the difference? Anyone know if this second digit does relate to region? If so which regions are our two devices? I'll see if expansys get back to me about the sticker on the first one... Opened the second, sticker all present and correct, IMEI in the range 100000 or so above the first, and the version is again 2.7.2.4 on this phone. From the box, the SKU is 1100398 for both, next to 'Model A10 Tri Band Phone For International Use' - have you got a different SKU? Googling the SKU comes up with Sierra Wireless's store at: http://airprime.com/estore/product.asp?SKU=1100398&CID=16 which is described as : Voq Professional Phone™ with VoqMail Professional Edition (For Europe) changing the SKU to 1100399 comes up with the North American Voqmail phone. If your SKU is 1100358 the you have an A10 designed for Europe with no Voqmail, 1100377 is the SKU for the North American version without Voqmail, and I think these 4 versions corresspond to the four firmwares avaialbe from Voq support? Richard
Guest Pondrew Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 Grrr... that explains it then. From the info you've provided I've got the 1100358 A10 designed for Europe with no Voqmail. Annoying that you get two of the professional versions and I get the run of the mill version. Stranger still is that it does seem to have Voqmail albeit Personal edition (as opposed to Professional). But... ...not sure I care that much. I've done some reading on Voqmail Professional and don't need it. Not even sure I'd need Voqmail as don't use my Smartphone for email much (rarely away from my desktop for more then a couple of days).

I'm sure you would have some comeback against expansys. Their description looks to be copied straight off Sierra's website, and mentions both personal and professional voqmail editions, but also states at the top: "The Voq™ professional phone is a new class of mobile phone that offers a flip-open QWERTY thumbpad and easy-to-use software solutions for business users, including secure, serverless, always-there e-mail. " Which from what I understand is a description of voqmail *professional* edition. Just depends whether you can be bothered returning it. They should at least make a distinction about which one you get. The expansys stockcode on my box is 110642. Richard
