Guest bradmatejo Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 This weekend my MPx200 was stolen. I've already reported it to Cingular, who have blacklisted the SIM and IMEI numbers. My main concern though is the data contained in the phone, particularly the SD card which had photos I'd rather scumbags didn't see. I don't really expect the average punk-ass thief to figure out how to use SmartExplorer to access the card, but I'm sure he can figure out how to just take the card out to access it. I don't suppose there's anything I can do about that now, huh? How long does the battery have to be dead before data is lost? My battery currently lasts about a day, so hopefully it'll die and they won't be able to access too much of my personal stuff. And with any luck, they won't bother to look at my card... Now here's my question. I'm planning on replacing the stolen phone with a SMT5600, and I'm now thinking about prevention. Is there software out there that can a)Help track a stolen phone, and b)Render it unusable? I've heard of CellTracker, but does it work in the US? And are there other options? As far as rendering a lost/stolen phone unusable, I'm in the mood for a remote hard reset solution, sort of a self-destruct. Like maybe some way I could call the phone, punch in a code, and it'll hard reset and format the card. Or possibly a PIN number required at startup, and after 2-3 wrong attempts it resets/formats. When combined with a nightly auto-shutdown/-reboot, that would do the trick. Anyone have any solutions or thoughts?
Guest chucky.egg Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 There's a great app for Symbian S60 called PhoneSecure, which lets you remotely lock your phone and sound a siren. AFAIK it won't protect your SD card though. You might want to look at FSecure too they do inline encryption which would protect "sensitive" images etc
Guest bradmatejo Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 Phonesecure sounds great. Is there anything similar for SmartPhone?
