HELP! MPx220 Hinge and Case Cracked

Hi all,

Can anyone help please????

I have had this phone now for about 4 months and all was well until last night! When I opened the flip to take a call I noticed a small crack fron the bottom of the screen to the hinge. I then closed the phone and reopened it however the crack turned into a "V" shape and one of the hinges came off.

Currently the phone's flip part is only held on by one of the two hinges!!!!

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Is is fixable - if so how?

Can I buy a replacement original housing for it in the UK?

How did that happen? Never read anything similar like your problem.

Yes there are plenty of housings on ebay but watch out and get a good oem quality one.

Good OEM housings are hard to find. www.cnn.cn is the best that I have found out there. The following link shows the black version of the case. CNN also carries the OEM silver case. http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=442099

Mine arrived in 4 days straight from Hong Kong. (i live in UK) :o

It wasn't to difficult to change the cover just time consuming. Took me just under 2 hours. I had a black cover before and this new silver one kicks ass!! It comes with everything you need to change the cover including tools. And its OEM.

If you need advice changing covers let me know.

or alternatively, take the phone back to your operator. This is covered in the warranty from Motorola. I had the same problem and received a new cover. There are issues with some of the covers.

I purchased a black and silver cover form eBay from china_store.

Whilst they weren't in perfect condition, they fit beautifully and are most likely OEM equipment as stated in the auction.

I also used the photos available at http://www.cnn.cn/mpx220/mpx220instruction.htm as a guide.

Although most of the pictures are self explanatory, some of them could use a few words of advice.

So here are my 10 tips for replacing your MPx220 housing:

Disassembly

1. The rubber grommets that cover the torx screws on the inside of the flip are not all the same. The top two are different to the bottom two. And the bottom left is different to the bottom right. Keep track of which is which for easier reassembly.

2. The four torx screws around the battery have a smaller head than the four torx screws around the inside of the flip. Again, keep track of which is which for easier reassembly.

3. During disassembly, DO NOT USE or USE ONLY WITH EXTREME CAUTION metal parts for prying the housings apart. If you use a metal screw driver you may damage the fragile plastic housings.

4. Be VERY CAREFUL removing the aerial. This is a fragile sticker that can tear easily and can even stretch if you pull it too much on the wrong angle. DO NOT RIP the aerial or you may experience problems with reception.

5. Be sure to remove the battery terminal connector from your old housing. This is best done by depressing the three battery contacts with your fingernail and gently sliding it directly out through the inside of the housing.

6. The Motorola logos (over the speaker at the top on the inside of the flip, at the top on the outside of the flip above the external LCD, at the base of the number pad and on the rear of the phone above the battery cover) can all be gently removed from your old housing. They are glued in place and a couple of them (specifically the circular "M" logos have a small tab at the top of the logo.

Reassembly

6. Ensure you have replaced all covers, specifically the miniSD and headphone covers and the "M" logos/ covers.

7. The mainboard is predominantly held in pace by two plastic tabs. These are located:

- Just above the Power button around the blue coloured chip on the mainboard.

- Approximately half way between the miniSD slot and the Camera button.

Make sure both these tabs have locked the mainboard in place securely before joining the housings together.

8. Clean all the glass and LCD displays very gently and carefully. This is best done using an alcohol wipe and allowing the alcohol to dry and then gently cleaning with a lint free lens cloth. This will ensure you have no smears or specks on your display. It is also wise to do the same for the camera lens and flash to ensure you get the best from your camera.

9. Be sure to test the power and signal reception before screwing it all back together. Only after testing these should you proceed to screw the torx screws in place and replace the grommets. This will save you time if you have missed something and will reduce load on the phone housing.

10. Be nice to your loved ones. For without the kindness and patience, you would not be able to do this without major distraction!!!

It should take you between 1 to 2 hours to complete a full housing change.

Have fun with your new, mark free cover.

all you need is a torx 5 screwdriver. these are sold relatively cheap (around $5) at you local hardware store.. no need wasting time ordering one online.

Thanks. I ordered some $8 toolset of cellphoneshop.net because it had some torx and other tools. Looks like it has the right torx head but the shaft is too wide to fit down the tunnel so I can't actually connect with the screws. I guess I'll have to go to the h/w store after all. Can't believe my phone is still working.

I have precise the same problem with my MPX220......the right hinges is cracked and loose......did do anything with it. just lay there and when the next morning i picked it up it was cracked...

I have just chaged the cover on my MPx220, but I can't seem to get a handle of the open/close mechanism... whatever makes the phone opne and close is still in my old cover... how do I transfer thi to my new cover???

A few days ago I changed the housing on my MPx220 from the regular silver housing to the black. At first everything worked fine but then I noticed that the outside LCD screen was upside down, or at least everything on it was. So I took the over off and did some rewiring, thinking that was the problem. Now NOTHING works! The WHOLE PHONE won't even power up! I'm going NUTS! I tried totally undoing the whole thing and redoing it. I've tried everything! My only idea is that it could be the flex wire for the LCD screens. I noticed that it was coming apart. Could that be the couplret or could it be something more? Any suggestion cause I'm going nuts without my phone!!!! I love my phone!!!!

I had problems with this too at first when I changed housing.... If you scoot the optical lens over towards the speaker on the earpiece, I think there is kind of connection in the wire there.... You can fiddle around with it with the cover off and make a call to like the local time/weather station until you hear it though the speaker in the ear piece (that's what I did)....

A common 'no sound' issue after changing the casing is that you haven't transferred the foam earpiece surround so the speaker has dropped height slightly and isn't pushing against the circuitboard to make contact anymore.

Thanks guys. I was able to fix both problems.

The no sound issue turned out to be a result of the foam. The speaker was not making contact with the main board beacause it was missing. I transferred it and then it worked fine.

The Hinge thing was just that glue had filtered into the phone from a previous fix and it was a little harder than usual to get out. Thanks for the help everyone.

Sure enough, I looked in the old housing case, AND THERE IT WAS!!! Still won't do me much good though since I can't get my phone to work after I tried to fix the upside screen issue!!!!!!! I'm still going nuts without my phone!! :) :) ;)
