Going from DVD to PocketMVP

OK Guys, anyone help out there?

I've ripped The Bourne Identity from DVD using SmartRipper and there is now a really big file sat on my hard drive (5Gb  ). I tried to convert this to a video file as per Ray's instructions posted on here a couple of weeks ago but all I was getting was the first chapter and then it stopped. Obviously I'm doing something wrong but has anyone any ideas?

I know I then have to use VirtualDub to convert it to Divx (using clinteastman's settings - thanks).

Hi SirGaz,

Best way i have found to rip a DVD to DivX is by means of the Gordian Knot rippack, this includes all the software you need, it used to include smartripper but has now been replaced with DVDecriptor, but also includes DVD2AVI, virtualdub and nandub, you can also rip the subtitles, Divx3 and 4 is included although i use 5. basically its a one stop shop, all you do is insert the dvd, hit the rip button, let it do its thing, then hit the dvd2avi button, let that do its thang, then set up your settings for the output file and hit the encode button and 2-3 hours latter a perfect divx rip.

full instructions are embedded with the rippack.

rippack is found at http://gknot.doom9.org/

also of use http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ for many many conversion guides and http://www.doom9.org/

hope that helps.

sorry to ressurect this post but there I have tried searching and for a novice ripper there is almost too much advice here and it seems to spawn to even more specialist sites on DVD-ripping. I am drowning under DVD-ripping information overload, I have searched and tried to sort it all first - honest!

So what I really need is a dumbo guide on how to convert odd bits of the DVD's I own to play on my SPV.

What I have is:

1) Smartripper

2)dvd2avi

3)virtualdub+clint's settings

4) divx 5.02 codec

what i think I need to do is

1) Use smartripper to get .vob file(s)

2) Some confusion here, do I use dvd2avi just to get Audio, to frameset the .vob's ready for virtualdub or to actually make the .avi? I could use some help with the settings here too.

3) what to do with virtualdub and the various files i might end up with after step 2. (do I just want .avi's or seperate audio as well etc etc)

I have so far had not much luck and ended up with a harddrive full of files, none of which are any use and also a PC that has been getting VERY warm doing all the sums!

Any help appreciated and if I have missed a thread with this guide please point me at it - I have seen a simple guide for MPEG's but I cannot find anything that has the complete start to finish for AVI's or Pocket MVP.

Many thanks

neil

PS I have gone for the most popular combo that seems to be in use, if I should be using gordian knot or something else instead of the suggestions above let me know!

Personally, I use the manual methods. I like to have control of the rip, so its long winded but you can customise it to exactly what you want.

First, I rip the DVD to my hard disk using SmartRipper.

Once ripped I then use FlaskMPEG to read the IFO file (Or the first VOB file) and select the audio and video stream I want (English is usually the first, but not always). Then you apply the relevant cropping and resizing options (Best look around for guides, but its pretty simple) and setup the relevant video and audio codecs. Finally, I leve it to do a 2 pass encode for the best quality. Several hours later (I'm on a pre GHz PC) I have the finished file.

I use DivX 5.0.5 for PC and DivX 5.0.3 for SPV. Rumours have it 5.0.5 also works in PocketMVP, but I'm yet to try it.

Hope this helps.

thanx for the reply, I'll give it a go, I assume in this case I apply VirtualDub right at the end to do the final conversion to SPV bitrates/sizes etc......?
