There are lots of distributions available of Linux. One of them that is geared towards the more inexperienced Linux user is Linspire. It's usually $49.95 but until 6th September, they're giving away for free: http://info.linspire.com/freespire/index.html

It's worth a look and is very polished compared to some of the more popular distros.

Hmm, there are numerous linux distros that are always free. "Suse" and "Fedora" seem to be top of most peoples lists right now, but I sticks with what I knowns; Debian.

It's actually Debian based! In any case, if you're used to Linux, this distro probably isn't for you. It's been built with a lot of hand-holding to help out windows users making the switch. Just about every package has been customised by Linspire, hence the cost.

Was Linspire not previously Lindows (before Microsoft sued them!)

It was a project to make Linux as close to windows as possible.
