Guest Apnomis Posted September 4, 2005 Report Posted September 4, 2005 Hi, this is about the 4th time of trying to post this and I've lost the other much longer attempts, so this time I'm keeping it to the point! Basically the casing on my SPV C500 has cracked over the LCD. The LCD is fine it's just the outer case. I need to know the best way of replacing it either DIY (where can I buy them?) or a repair shop (how much?). Also I have the silver version, so I would need either a silver replacement case or just the actual clear bit over the LCD if that can be replaced separately? Sorry for the short first post, as I say my previous attempts were much longer!
Guest Apnomis Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 (edited) Me again! Right I'm on a more reliable internet connection now, so hopefully I shouldn't have as much trouble posting! I've been searching for solutions for my problem, and frankly there doesn't seem to be one :o Basically if I want it fixing I'll need to pay £55 to HTC Europe to get a whole new front  (I forgot to ask if the new casing would be silver like I've got now?) Problem is that's around half as much as the whole phone cost me just a few weeks ago  I'm going to try and live with the crack for now, but eventually I may bring myself to being robbed in broad daylight! 55 chuffing quid for a 4cm x 3cm piece of clear plastic! I'm seriously considering trying a DIY fix, would anyone who has dismantled a C500 before happen to know if the clear plastic LCD screen can be separated from the rest of the front facsia? Any recommendations on what plastic I could use to replace it and where to get it? Surely it can't be that hard, not to justify £55! Edited September 5, 2005 by Apnomis
Guest funkychicken9000 Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 You can buy new casings off ebay for ~£20 IIRC. They're dead easy to fit, just look up the Dust removal instructions and follow them to dismantle it :o

I mean it would only cost a few quid to buy a sheet of clear plastic of about the same thickness and cut it to size, but again it's dependent on if the clear LCD cover can be separated from the rest of the front casing. Or would trying to do that not be recommended?
Guest fluffcat1 Posted September 7, 2005 Report Posted September 7, 2005 Hello, I did try replying to one of your posts: Hello, www.htceurope.com would be your best bet, or you can buy a fascia or dummy phone off ebay (will be black though ) and swop it yourself, but you'll loose any remaining warranty you have left on the phone. From what I've seen you can't just swop the plastic screen section, it's a swop-the-whole-fascia type job. But you'll join the elite members of the 'fully-black-c500-club' of which I am a member, as well as the just as exclusive fully silver.... (I had one of both and swopped them so the middle sections matched :o Just a thought - silver version = orange premier customer = orange care insurance, do you still have it on your account? £15 fee and they courier one out to you. Richard There's someone in the 'for sale' section of the forums with the fascias for sale. Why not ask his previous customers for their old fascias to experiment on to get the plastic out? Richard

Guest Apnomis Posted September 7, 2005 Report Posted September 7, 2005 Just a thought - silver version = orange premier customer = orange care insurance, do you still have it on your account? £15 fee and they courier one out to you. I have the phone on PayG, it was second hand off someone I know. They have a premium account and update their mobile all the time. I take it the insurance is attached to his account rather than the phone? I could give it back to him and ask him to claim, but Orange would probably only support his current handset... Nice idea painting it, but seems like a bit too much like hard work for my liking! I was speaking to my brother-in-law about it and how I couldn't understand how it cracked, given that it was a hot day on when it broke he suggested if it was possible that it cracked from heat and that perhaps I should insist on a warranty repair. But I don't think HTC would buy that, would they ever treat cosmetic damage as a warranty issue? I couldn't prove to them that it didn't crack from misuse (though it was on it's own in a baggy pocket and wasn't dropped), but then again could they prove that it didn't crack because of a weak screen? I probably won't try it as they charge a processing fee if they don't accept the claim, but has anyone ever tried to do it via warranty?
Guest fluffcat1 Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 (edited) I received a bundle of SPV's today, including a few silver C500's with development roms ( see other thread ) and all have a crack on the screen. I also got a black c500 which is rough as **** so I'll swop the fascia and experiment on removing the plastic - it has a scratch along the top so not an ideal candidate for a donor, but at least it'll prove the concept and I won't ruin a decent cover trying...
