Guest alex_papworth Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 :?: Does anyone know why when you choose to turn off the SPV via the Quick List there is an option 'Radio Off' ?
Guest moff Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 I read somewhere in the Microsoft blurb that this function is called 'flight mode' it is so you can use certain features of the phone - MP3, video, calendar etc when it isn't convenient to connect to the mobile network such as during flights and in hospitals. Here is a thread discussing the use of your phone as in-flight entertainment for further info: http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=1860
Guest AsherUK Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 Yeah, it switches off the transmission / reception part of the phone so you could (in an ideal world) use the other features of the phone on a plane etc. It can also be useful when playing a game on the SPV and you don't want to be disurbed half way through by someone calling you !!
Guest youngerpants Posted January 21, 2003 Report Posted January 21, 2003 Moff is correct, it essentially turns the antennae off so your phone loses its phone functionality (so you can use it on a plane, but not recommended) and turns it into more of a PDA. It is not (as I hoped) an FM radio (even better a short wave radio, so I can get the United score when I'm out of the country
Guest eolith Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 it is also a lot quicker than turning the phone off, for when you are in the cinema and such like
Guest Oggie Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 I though mobile companies had been discouraged from including things like 'flight mode' so the airlines dont have to argue with people saying "but its ok its in flight mode" Seems like a pretty stupid idea
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 This has to be the stupidest idea ever Why? This is a feature that can have some pratical uses when more useful pda style apps come in to use. There will always be places that mobile phone interferance will be frowned on. This is one way of being able to still use the features on the phone (except calls of course) and not break the rules.
Guest Syvwlch Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 I use it all the time, in meetings and in restaurants. I have noticed that it's not that great for planes... because the phone is unable to turn the radio back on when the network it shut down with is not available when it tries to restart. I have to reboot the phone to get the radio part to start up again. Anybody else got this behaviour?
Guest yatpeak Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 I just wanted to warn anyone who is planning to go on a plane with their SPV, it's quite possible that the hostesses won't be familiar with new technologies and won't understand what you mean by "it's in radio off mode" and insist that you turn your phone off, not your radio. :) Wyatt
