Guest Gee Man Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 Hi there, After much hmming & haring, I upgraded my C 500 to M 500 last Wdnesday & I am very pleased with my new friend. Something unnerving happened yesterday, I had an incoming call, on the second ring, as I was answering the phone, it died. I thought just a glitch, NO! I pressed the on button on the side & to my disapointment the thing had lost every piece of information, including 20 or so photos of the previous day's birthday i had attended. The phone started to install all the pre loaded software as it did when i first got it. Has anyone else had this, is it a common event of M 500 ownership or should I have a word with Orange ? Any thoughts would be grand Thanks in advance GEE
Guest mavisdavis Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 sounds alot like teh memory issue thats getting my nerves. Do a soft reset just befor it starts to install all teh Orange crap then look for the post regarding what to install from teh extended rom. I must admit that it did do it to me when I 1st got it
Guest chucky.egg Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 Could also be a flat battery! If the main battery runs out altogether, like mine nearly did on the first day of "testing" (read: playing and not doing any work at all) it resets and wipes everything.
Guest scottt Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 Mine did a hard reset 5 days old, I was opening the camera when I had a incoming call and it just froze did a soft reset and it decided a hard reset was needed. Been fine since and I am quite impressed, I feel its more stable than any smartphone or xda I have had, so I just put it down to the phone letting me know that its still a windows based device !!
Guest Pondrew Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 Never had a spontaneous hard reset on my MDA III so maybe it's a drawback of the reduced ram (64meg) the Jam/M500 has. May not be much comfort but at least it's not as crippled as the aborted MPX was with its 32meg!
Guest ScottyDo6 Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 So how do you soft or hard reset a SPV C500 - mine died while launching a nav app. Any help appreciated... as i am currently incommunicado....which is not very smart! Now it stuck in flight mode (radio off) and most apps don't work (message app not signed). Some original apps still work. I suspect card may also have been wiped but can't tell for sure. Camera apps doesn't work. Windows Media does but finds nothing to play... I tried on/off and removing battery.
Guest Gee Man Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 A quick update for anyone who is interested, my M 500 crashed for the 3rd time in less than a month, loosing all data stored in the phone. When it dies, the phone turns it self off, which caused massive grief to my other half who was desperatly trying to contact me to discuss family matters!! Orange have informed technical support & have promised me that they will respond within 10 days, that was 7 days ago!!! I'm sure I have a dud unit - to die on avarage every 8 days is pretty shabby even by MS standards. I will keep my fingers crossed that they will swap the unit for a different one. regards Gee Man :o
Guest Tech Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 (edited) stay clear of M500 from what im hearing/reading and seeing I think it was another user on this forum who gave nothing but endless list of problems with M500 or another Mxxx device if he walked past, it hard reset itself if he caughed, it hard reset itself if he touched it... it hard reset itself ... LOL... endless fun problems obviously im staying away.. until C600 comes out.. that will be my next phone probably Edited September 27, 2005 by Tech

I was told by a guy in Orange retentions that it's on hold pending investigation into a technical problem - at the time I thought this was just BS to get me off the line, but have many people been encountering serious difficulties with it? Does anyone have any reliable info as to what's going on with the M500?
Guest Supercool_Desi Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 Help....... I have the M500 and in two months it soft reset itself 3 times and died on me totally twice after showing a full battery charge. There is something seriously wrong with this handset......does anyone know how to stop these faults from occurring??? or is that silly question?
Guest Gee Man Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 sorry to hear that alot of other people are suffering from m500 probs, but also good to know that i am not the only one. i still have not heard anything from Orange tech support, so for the time being have gone back to my c 500 which seems sold as a rock on return !!!! i will let you know how i get on. i will kick up a stink if they do not sort something out in the next couple of days. Guest leinadafc Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 (edited) I got a M500 about 90 days ago. No problems so far. I have the full complement of Standard Orange software installed plus a few other bits and pieces, e.g. Core Player, SuperBomerman, Sudoku, Microsoft Reader, Deltalock, Argentum. Overall pretty happy with upgrade from C500 - find I actually watch movies on the thing rather than just pathetically showing off to friends. Not schaudenfreud I assure you, just thought I'd report a case where the phone seems to be behaving itself. Of course, now I have posted this either thing will start crashing or I will drop it in the loo or something! Edited October 6, 2005 by leinadafc
Guest zabirp Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 The fact that it randomly locks up or hard reset's itself is why I like my M500 so much :o Mine did a hard reset within a few days of having it too. One of the best apps you'll come across is Sprite Backup. Dunno where i'd be without it.

Because if they are then it's a flawed device. My MDA III has never spontaneously hard reset nor locked up leading to a hard reset. I guess it again comes back to the low level of ram in the Magician. The exact same reason that the Motorola MPX was shelved. At 32meg ram it was inherantly unstable
Guest Confused Stu Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 I've been running my M500 hard since I first got it back in August, and it's never failed on me yet. I've even tried it with the Extended Storage ROM too, and that's proved stable too. One thing I am pathetically obsessive about is free memory. I always make sure I close my applications (not just minimise them with the "X", actually get a program that closes them) and nothing is ever running in the background. This was a habit I got into with the original SPV and it seemed a good habit to keep through the upgrades. If memory is the problem, could my behaviour be the cause of my phone's stability? Or is it just a case that mine came from a "good" batch? In short, anyone with a stability problem, get into the habit of stopping your programs and keeping your memory high and it should improve.
Guest zabirp Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 It's happened to me whilst removing applications a couple of times, but since i did the hard reset/soft reset trick it's been stable. I do still get lock ups (maybe once a week) but I now have a habit of using "close all" from spb pocket plus and do soft resets a couple of times a day! The memory does seem to be an issue with the M500 'cos it does tend to slow down quite a bit.
Guest Gee Man Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 Hi there, good to hear that is isn't all doom & gloom out there in M500 land. A quick update since my last post....... Nothing! Orange haven't done a thing, I have rang them twice & they are still waiting for tech support to ask me another question that solves nothing. To say I am unhappy is an understatment. So the poor person that answers my call to premier will get a right ear full. Keep you posted Gee man
Guest Gee Man Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 I took delivery of my replacement m 500 this morning. I have my fingers crossed that things will be cool with this phone. keep you posted. Gee Man
