Guest jwexqm Posted September 7, 2005 Report Posted September 7, 2005 I have an Orange SPV M500 and I'm getting to grips with it. It's replacing a Sony Ericsson (Symbian) P800 which I'd become quite attached to until I dropped it one too many times. When I receive a call I get this displayed... Fine, 2 options. But 'ignore' doesn't do what I'd expect - it diverts to voicemail. Now really I'd have thought 3 options would be appropriate here: answer - answers the call ignore - silences the device, stops vibrating and hides the pop-up divert - diverts the call to voicemail Anyone else bothered by this? Guest stranger Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 hey im actually moving from a P800 to a M500 to. should be getting mine tomorrow. (i better! been messed around big time). how different is the M500? from what i gather theres loads of difference. is it hard to get used to the M500? ive been on the P800 for 2 years now and kinda used to the fone. thanks
Guest jwexqm Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 generally speaking I like the SPV M500 coming from the P800. I desperately miss the P800's jog wheel. The M500 has an up/down spring centred slider on the left hand side but it only seems to be used for increasing or decreasing the volume. It doesn't have the universal scrolly functionality that the P800 had. (if I'm wrong on this and there's some way of making the slider a generic up/down key then I'd like to hear) I'm not that keen on the stylus at the moment. Maybe the mutant P800 plastic thing has broken me. I'm a leftie with poor writing but I just find this thin silver thing hard to grab onto and connect with. There are a range of input methods. If you're used to the P800's script then you'll find one that allows you to make the transition quite painlessly. The device seems quicker and more capable and you get less feeling that it's about to run out of RAM all the while. I've got a wireless LAN SDIO card on order and 1GB high speed SD card. These are 2 features I'm looking forward to using. The 128MB limit of the P800's MS duo was a bit annoying at times. May even splash out on TomTom Navigator 5 with BT GPS when funds permit. I never had the flip on my P800 so I'm used to thumbling the LCD. The M500 is about the same in terms of usability in this respect. T9 lookup is cool on the phone app. If I want 'dad' I just type '323' and it refines the list. The same interface can be used to refine the list by area code. So let's say I want to list all numbers beginning with 01234 I'd type '01234'. This view isn't without issue though and here's why... My address book contains a mixture of numbers in the format beginning with +44 xxxx xxx xxx and 0xxxx xxx xxx. The +44 numbers started coming into being when I spent time abroad and needed the international dialing code. The SPV seems poorer than the P800 at recognising that both formats are the same number. For this reason I can't use the area code refinement feature. (unless of course someone has a workaround) Syncing's better. I used to have an old mono CE device ages ago and always liked ActiveSync. I'm glad to be back. This said I've not been able to get ActiveSync to work over Bluetooth. Get yourself up and running with the USB cable first and then fuss. Shame there's no cradle. USB charging is cool. You'll notice a significant speedup using the USB interface to load apps and data onto the phone compared with the P800. Sony used a USB to RS-232 bridge chip so it's no suprise that the speed was so poor. I'm a big fan of apps to enrichen the experience and so far I'd recommend the following... Adobe Reader 2.0 (better than the shipped one but huge) gsplayer (not tried it yet but it seems liked) total commander CE (file manager) That's it for now. Hope you like your M500 too. Please share tips for P800 migrators if you find anything useful James

All spv's (from the original to the m500) allow you to stop it ringing/vibrating when a call comes in by simply pushing the volume down button. When an incoming call comes in, just click the volume button down once and it silences it/stops it vibrating and lets the call time out before diverting to voicemail (or whatever you have set your phone to do on unanswered calls). However, it does not remove the popup and you could still hit the answer/ignore buttons - so be careful not to think its cancelled the call. AFAIK all other brands of phones operate similarly ie if you hit "ignore" on any phone, it does whatever it is programmed to do with unanswered calls. My various nokias/motorolas etc all did.

I was used to having the option to silently 'leave' the incoming call on my P800 that's all. Thanks James
