Guest edliddle Posted September 12, 2005 Report Posted September 12, 2005 does anyone know if you can connect a pringles tin style yagi to an m2000? there is a small socket on the back of the spv but i cant work out if its for a standard phone antenna or for a wifi antenna .
Guest Samsonite Posted September 12, 2005 Report Posted September 12, 2005 whilst you could probably cardboard engineer a connection to the back of the unit, i wouldnt advise it. Its a fairly standard question asked here about boosting signals with various antennae and the general answer is dont bother. The antenna in any radio device worth its salt is a complex part of the circuitry and is made to exact measurements concerning physical dimensions and electrial properties. If you attach your home made attempt, i would be surprised if you managed to improve on the normal antenna and there is a chance (albeit rather small) that you could damage your precious toy... Just to scare you unnecessarily, if your SWR is wrong you would send all the transmitted energy straight into the front end of of your LNA (receiver) and basically blow its ears off!! for the miniscule potential gain, its hardly worth the hassle.....

Take a look at the internal photos that people have posted, see if there are different antennas inside for all of the RF devices. People have gotten WiFi to work over distances of over 50 miles using bogstandard WiFi equiptment hooked up to custom antennas! That's a massive improvement; I've also seen similar feats done with Bluetooth. A pringles can can be used to produce a not bad home-version of this. A directional antenna can be used to determine the source of the signal, but that's delving into wardriving and could get get you into bother!
