Unusual c500 fault

Got some more phones today, including a c500 that has trouble starting up - I get the splash screen OK for a few seconds, then the backlight blinks on and off every second, and the screen slowly fades to white....

I've opened it without voiding the warranty seal and can see no evidence of water damage, so tried updating the firmware. This went very slowly but seemed to go ok, but the phone does the same thing! I can get into the bootloader screen, and can get the hard reset screen up, but it won't startup?...

Any ideas before I send it back to HTC and get a bill for 'software flashing failure'?...

A friend had a very similar problem with the screenfading to white - I found if ou squeezed the 'spv' symbol between the two black buttons then it would come back.

HTC/Orange should replace it for free since it is a hardware problem. :o
