I got my C500, 13 months old now so safely out of warranty, and it's very tattered.

Everything works fine but the case is scuffed, buttons worn and screen scratched.

I want a new fascia, buttons and perhaps a new chassis so what are my options.

I've tentatively booked it in with HTC for a refurb but I'm wary that as soon as the phopne comes in they'll try to test it faults and bill me for that. They say they do a factory refurb for ~£30. Does this include new fascia, chassis and buttons?

errrm, and the rest!

Full Cosmetic Refurbishment £28.50

Courier in UK (Less than 1 Kg) £7.63

Labour £23.00

if you have it done at the same time as warranty work they only charge £28.50 as they have the phone in bits anyway.

cheaper to buy a new case and do it yourself.

There are some listed in the for sale section by andyleem and myself.

Guess I'll not be sending it to them then. They never mentioned th elabour charge on top.

Change of topic:

Anyone selling a fascia and buttons (and possibly a torx-t6 screw driver)?

It gets worse. That doesn't include VAT...the bottom line is: £69.48

Torx - maplin

Face and buttons - here or here.

Instructions here.

If you're careful you don't have to remove the warranty sticker. Not that it matters, but it look sbetter if you resell it.

Ta.

I'm gonna get a new face plate from Andy, try to spray my chassis black and borrow a screw driver from work.

Shouldn't be a problem, I built and ran a helium dilution refrigerator once upon a time...

Wot, like this you mean? :o

Careful painting it - I used a black chassis from a silver spv. To get the orange logo off I used a fibreglass pencil, but some people use their fingernails and others use sugercubes (!) honest...

Yeah like that.

It's that which gave me the idea.

I took the logo off my current fascia with a penknife, looks ok when it's dark. :o

Might try the sugarcube technique next time. Any suggestions on what paint to use for the chassis?

pah! steal my ideas, and can't even buy the fascia from me...I feel like Giorgio Armani seeing one of his designs in George at Asda... :(

anyway, it's quite hard plastic, you'd need to key it first I would think to get any spray paint to take. Do you have a spare to experiment on? Most car places have black plastic paint to repair car bumpers. I'd use a matt not gloss finish.

A fibreglass pencil ( from maplins, CPC etc) would be useful to key the plastic and give a surface for the paint to bind to, It's also be useful removing the orange logo.

New plan.

Shiny white iPod style.

Use old fascia after replacement to test painting, along with battery cover and antenna cover. If they work well then I can do the main chassis and my new fascia. Next mission after that is an iPod skin for media player and ipos style color scheme and home screen.

Assumed requirements:

white matt spray paint (acrylic)

lacquer spray (acrylic)

Masking tape

Fibreglass pencil

Will let you all know how it goes.

Somebody on a german forum did a chrome effect face - it looked very good :-)

You can remove the perspex screen section easily like this so masking may not be necessary. You'll end up with cut fingers if you use a fibreglass pencil to rub down all the paint n the fascia - perhaps some very fine sandpaper would be better?

It sounds cool :-)

I had a go at taking some of the silver off the chassis last night. I think pearly white and gray will look quite good with the buttons left as silver.

The silver paint, despite coming away in places, is actually quite firmly applied. Anyone got any suggestions for removing it? I couls try a solvent but not sure which one will not damage the plastic.

Additionally,

The 2.5mm headset jack. Will a standard 2.5 to 3.5mm stereo jack work or is it wired up slightly oddly due to the mic and answer button functions?

Try Ebay, sometimes you can find Dummy Phone cases, that come complete with buttons and case. As for paying someone to do it, the case is easily removable, though does void warranty. If you have had it that long though, has the warranty not already expired? Just a thought.

Righto refurb done. Not too painfull except getting the speaker out of the fascia was a bit tricky.

All in all it looks quite special now. It's still default black and silver though but looks factory new. I might have to reposition the chassis, the camera and power buttons don't seen right.
