I phoned up Orange to check i'm ok for using my phone in Ireland.

she said data access is about a 5er per meg. The website says £8 per meg.

Who/ what is right?

Rick,

That's about right. 1MB cost me approx £10. Lesson learnt. Do not roam on GPRS. Indeed do not roam at all. I have found it cheaper to buy local sim cards for calling out. I noe have: cypriot; irish; french; UAE and Spanish sim cards. Much cheaper than roaming

I was told that your included mins texts and data bundles and anything else, are not used and you have to do everything by Payg, at t he r ate for the country you are visiting.

The question is how much will it cost?

I'm interested in Ireland costs for next month.

oh and the 4mb GPRS bundle is £4

How much is it for GPRS on a local sim in france, out of interest? You'd thnk orange would be cheap being france telecom and all.

Using my option globetrotter card and UK sim I was able to get GPRS coverage from Orange UK in calais earlier this year, but couldn't connect my voice handset...

so how do I get hold of one for one of Ireland's networks?

Would I need to get my C500 network unlocked from Orange UK?

It's never been unlocked as yet.

Roaming in Europe on an Orange sim card is £28 per MB!

...roamng certainly hurts the pocket...I learnt that on my last holiday to the Caribbean...big bill on my return...

...they should really figure out a way to 'bundle' the roaming charges with inclusive minutes/data...you may use it quicker, but you are not just racking up 'surprise' charges...

Cheers

Nick

On Vodafone roaming is either £5.80 or £8.60 per MB. A far cry from £28.

It should be made illegal to charge such ridiculous prices.

Not sure it should be made illegal to charge whatever they want but it should be made very clear before you do it that youi will be charged such ridiculous amounts.

Well I'm sure Oftel would not allow BT to charge £28 to make a call from Manchester to London for instance....

£28 per MB for GPRS roaming is scandalous.

My phone bill this month was £405. And what did I do to get that amount?

100 Mins of UK calls (700 still unused).

150 Text Messages (120 part of my bundle).

9MB of GPRS roaming charges.

A pretty quiet month if you ask me.

Make sure that the whole amount was amassed abroad, and that you haven't recently changed your payment plan.

I took away a bolt-on and was suddenly charged 10 pounds per mb right here in the uk. I called orange and got a significantly reduced bill.

Even if I have 50MB left on my plan not one bit of it can be used abroad. All GPRS roaming, like voice is charged independently from your bundled quotas.

Only Vodafone allow you to use your bundled minutes abroad.

My avice to everyone is to check this linkhere to see the costs before you go abroad. Also restrict yourself to important text e-mails. I agree it is very expensive, Vodafone are moving in the right direction.

That means the CS operator you had didn't re-apply the "pay-as-you-consume" GPRS package. Ring them up and moan and you should be re-credited.
