Can I turn off calendar alerts?

Hi gurus,

Is it possible to turn off calendar event alerts? I want to be able to check my calendar on my phone but I don't want it to keep beeping until I click "Dismiss".

Or alternatively, is it possible to make it just alert once?

If you go into Calendar, hit the Menu button and choose Options you can set reminders to None.

I did that but it didn't do what I thought it would do - I still get reminders, repeatedly until I click Dismiss.
